When I looked into them, and from O/O that I spoke to when I was, they are cheap, cheap, cheap. Under a buck a mile plus fuel cheap. A guy I know was leased to them for all of 2 months. I hauled a broker load or two in my reefers into Florida for them, which had to be a decent rate, but that was 5 years ago.

Well being an o/o with Roehl isn't but .90cpm or so plus fuel surcharge. I do want to become and o/o in the near future but I'm not willing to jump into it without knowing as much info as possible about whatever company I decide to go with. One drawback with Landstar other than the age requirement is they require hazmat. I've never had a desire to get hazmat....

Plus I was told if I'm going to buy a 379exhd or w900L then I don't wanna lease to Roehl because of their 265" wheelbase limit and I was told they lowered their fuel surcharge.

You can take my advice for what you pay for it, but if you think you're going to make big bucks with a shiny Pete running for sub 1.00 rates, you are sorely mistaken. A good percentage contract with someone that has DIRECT freight is where you want to be. Running your butt off 3,500 miles per week for .90 plus fuel will only give you a high gross and a lot of deductions. With two years experience, you should be making 50k per year, even in FL, as a company driver. Therefore, to compensate for the risk of owning your own truck, you either need to make significantly more, or work less to make that 50k. Less miles, more revenue!

Thanks fortycal. I know what you mean though, honestly if I buy a Pete it's going to be a 1996-2003 with an overhauled engine. As long as the exterior and interior are decent I'll be happy. I've found a lot of them on truck paper. com for $20k-$40k. I'm thinking of I'm able to save up and get a low enough payment I should be able to counteract the fuel costs.
I priced out insurance on myself now, 21, 2 months experience, 0 experience as an o/o and it was around $120/week from OOIDA.
If I buy my own truck I'll be getting rid of my car, that'll save me $600/month. I stay out 17-22 days at a time and go home for a max of 4-5 days. Ever since I started driving Its become what I love and my passion. I went home for 4 days last week and by the 2nd day I was ready to call my dispatcher and tell him I was coming back out. I was bored sitting at the house watching tv.
I like sleeping in a different state every night. I enjoy the open road. So I know I won't mind being out awhile to make enough to cover my expenses. Plus I'll need to worry about a maintenance account incase things go wrong with the truck.
I see it as I got 1-2 years to think about all this and the same amount of time to get advice from y'all on this forum. -
So to revive my thread.
I called sunco the other day. The recruiter told me the following
Living in Florida I can choose 2 fleets.
1-drive 13 states regional on a Tropicana account for $1.30/mile including fuel surcharge.
2-drive all 48 states and be paid 69% plus fsc. (Number two is what I would choose if i work there)
Anyway, they have age limit for trucks, 2002+. They will accept a 98-01 if its in good condition and passes dot inspection. Also they run elogs, qualcomm, pre pass, ezpass, and they pay for reefer fuel.
So in October ill be 22, then in November ill have a year of tractor trailer experience. If by then I have enough money I plan on buying a truck and going g with then. They told me they have trucks to lease but she suggested I buy my own and take it to them. I wanna work for a Florida based company since that's where I live. -
To pull for Sunco your truck has to weigh 19,000 lbs or less with a half tank of fuel and with all your stuff and you in the truck. I pulled for them in '04 out of Oswego, IL. The driver was to pay for the reefer fuel. If you dropped a unit with a half tank it was charged back to you. I always cleared at least $1800 a week after deductions for fuel, plates, insurance and support payments. Now I'm thinking about buying a truck lol.
