There has not been a map update for a couple of years. I have a 720 with about 375,000 miles on it... was thinking about a new 740. With the lack of map updates, I think I'll wait. Maybe a Garmin....

I bought a Garmin and hated it. I posted a few pages back exactly why. I ended up returning it within the 7 days I was allowed because it was just way too clunky to navigate the menus, set up my multi stop trips, and even just setting up one destination was complicated.

RM usually has a full map update about once a year with small updates every few months. We just had a full map update a couple of months ago but I believe it was just for the 730 and the tablets. I think the 720 isn't powerful enough and or has adequate memory to run the new map updates with all the improvements. I think Mark was saying at the last update that RM was thinking to put out some kind of update for the older models(720) but haven't seen any postings on that.
It sucks that these units get outdated in 2-3 yrs, but how else are they going to sell all the new models that they keep coming out with LOL. -
anyone ever have to buy a Micro SD card for your Rand? (i have an older TND 510)
i was doing (or trying to do) an update yesterday and a pop up told me there was no more disk space available.
so i was doing some online searches for Micro SD cards, i may very well get a 128 GB for the prices of under $60 for a name brand.
Amazon, New Egg, have these, as i am sure wally's world does as well.
i run linehaul route, so my stop off points are the same, only on the rarest of all times, do i ever have to go to another terminal.
many of these updates (from what i can see during the download) is for construction sites and other POI (points of interest)
thanks in advance to all that reply. -
A micro sd card will not work for the 510.
The 520/720 used an 8 gig class 10 card for the updates a couple of years ago but now the 720 cannot handle new updates.
I had a 710 and when they did an update on it you had to purchase a preloaded chip from Rand McNally.
Best to spring for a new unit.buddyd157 Thanks this. -
oh ok, cuz on the side of the GPS, there is a slot for it.
buying a new one would make better sense in the long run, then i'm thinking i hardly ever use this one now, then too, when i run out of space for updates, do i go and buy yet another..???
seems planned obsolescence is everywhere.
thanks @tow614 for your response, it is appreciated. -
If you dont use it that much then just stick with what you got and use google maps to fill in the blanks.

yes, true, but i only have a prepaid flip phone. with no added extra's. i never had any desire to go all out modern, to communicate with any one.
this is the not so much a problem, but with a pre-set terminal to terminal job, really no need for anything more than the construction updating.
my kids,,,,sheesh......they get on my arse for not being a cool dad that has all the toys.Friend Thanks this.
