As I said, do not quote me on this... I am missing a piece of the puzzle in how the 720/Wi-Fi via a hotspot shows or determines your reporting location.

Depending on how fast the front is moving you may be seeing data off some due to refresh calls.

Again, more refresh calls = more data used.

The 720 is not reporting on the minute live weather. It is showing weather from refresh call to refresh call. I know the refresh call, but cannot disclose it.

    Thanks,
    Mark

Of interest Mark. I am here in Raphine, Va bout 20 miles south of Staunton, Va. The cell site is roughly 5 miles almost due south according to my monitoring software. Current weather page is showing for Staunton, Va. So I guess that would be the nearest reporting station. The cell site is 25 or so miles south of the reporting area.

Moved up to Harrisonburg, Va. The tower I am connected to now less then 1/2 mile to the northwest of me. Getting current weather for Staunton still, 20 miles to the south.

You still have to account for refreshes. It may not have refreshed yet. As prior I noted, do not quote me on the cell towers.

    Thanks,

Just to clarify. I work more on hardware/software issues than the interworkings of Wi-Fi/weather. It is nice to know, but is it critical to know?

I know my phone picks up other towns 30-40 miles away. I do a refresh and suddenly {Poof} it knows where I am. This is based upon the towers I am hitting at the time.

The 720 uses Wi-Fi from a Hotspot be it from your phone/Mi-Fi when you are driving or a hotspot when you might be sitting. How it translates this information either from the cell tower you are hitting or your physically Lat/Long is a piece of the puzzle I do not know.

It could be many factors on why you see a town 20 miles away on the 3-day forecast. It could be the transmitting data is only showing for that location even though you are not physically there.

The 720 does do refreshes every x minutes. This is information I cannot give out. It was suggested that the driver be allowed to set the refreshes. You and I think along the same on this. I send that suggestion in early that morning based upon a post you did earlier.

Will Rand go along with this? It will have to be thought out and like any other business - Money is the bottom line. Code would have to be written and this is part of the cost.

Would the driver accept this? If the driver sets it for a faster refresh and suddenly they are looking at a huge $ on their bill, the first they will blame is Rand. Drivers see 12'6" bridges with signs posted all the time, yet they run into them and Rand gets the first phone call.

If you are passing through a town, then why do you need to know the 3-day forecast for a town you will not be in an hour? The 3-day forecast is mainly for your pick up/drops.

Not to take this matter lightly, but this is simply a 3-day forecast.

    Thanks,
    mark

You want perfect weather each time you look for the exact lat/long you are at. I already mentioned that you get x refreshes per x minutes. I will not disclose those numbers.

I can only tell you what I know. I mentioned several times that it is pulling weather correctly from your Hotspot. It may not be your physical location, but you can always enter the city you are in and set it to Origin and then go back to the 3-day forecast.

What you are doing is checking the 3-day forecast as you go through each city. The refresh rate will never keep up with you doing this. By the time the refresh rate calls you are already x miles from that city behind you now.

Let's move on. This is a hardware/software support thread.

    Thanks,
    Mark
