well, I've had a chance to play with my new unit quite a bit, but there is still one thing I really need, that I can't seem to get it to do:
give me a detail of a planned route so I can review it to see if I need to make changes and to get an overview of how it's taking me.
My Tom Tom will give me a text list of every road, turn and distance for each leg. Does the TND offer that?
Right now, it only lets me see the next three turns ahead. I have to have more faith than a pentecostal preacher for long trips!
My trips are often three to five days and I'd like to plan each day, each stop and list them. If I'm driving from Seattle to Charlotte, I know I have nearly 4,000 miles, but I need to break them up so I can plan my overnights, rests, fuel, etc.
    How are people handling this?
Also, I need to see if it's taking me around my elbow to get to my butt.
Today, after dropping a load in Tecumseh, Ontario, it wanted to route me across the bridge back thru Detroit to get me to Toronto. After I took a left on Hwy 401, it readjusted itself and routed me properly.
If I hadn't known that, I would have ended back in customs where I'd have probably been arrested for screaming incoherantly at a GPS!

If you are on the map screen, look to the right and about 1/2 inch down is a icon with 3 lines. Tap on that. It is a Turn-by-turn list. Currently you will only see the first segment of a multi-stop trip, but if you are going from A-B then you will see all the routes it has selected.

On the main page\preferences\route settings - you can avoid cross country borders.

    Thanks,
    Mark

Please E-Mail me the serial number off the back of the TND. On the back, right side.

    Thanks,
    Mark

I sent this note to RM today. I still haven't received a note back yet for the input I made in regard to towns not listed right off I-95 south of DC or Jersey City plotting etc...

At any rate, I figured I would post it here to see if any one else has had a similar experience.

One other note maybe Mark could help with. I get a guy at support. Is there an actual Tech Support for the TND units? I now have one of each.

When I was on I-81 S in NY state yesterday my TND 500 recalculated for no apparent reason and showed my truck off the the highway by some distance. This wreaked havoc on the GPS and caused it to try to recalculate every time I would cross an intersecting road. Also it was not able to give me any directions to my destination because it could not plot my exact location. I called the Rand TND support folks. After waiting for 1/2 an hour I got someone on the other end. Their thought was that the unit might have overheated. Their solution was to push in the reset button (on the back) for 10 seconds. Interesting, I had restarted the unit a couple of times and finally removed it from the windshield pedestal so that it could cool down. Just prior to the support from Rand taking my call the unit re established itself. Maybe it was over heating. I don't know. The whole off coordinate event lasted 30-40 miles on 81 north of Syracuse.

Everyone was affected yesterday early afternoon for about 45 minutes. Loss of signal from the satellites. I was in NC and just happend to be driving when it happened, and I had a tester in MI had the same thing happen. Nothing was mentioned in the news about it.

This was out of Rand's control and tech support when you called yesterday was in the dark as everyone else trying to figure out what happened.

You may or may not get a reply to your Tell Rand.

    Thanks,
    Mark

    Mark,

I hate posting this here, but it seems that you are more knowledgeable than TS. I just received a new replacement 700 from RM. I wanted to know how I could restore my personal gps info from the backup of the old unit. I did a backup before I sent the unit back to RM. I was under the impression that they would just repair it and send it back; however, they sent me a brand new unit. This is not a problem, except that the PC recognizes the unit as TND 2, and when I hit restore, it only restores from the backup that the unit made automatically when it was first updated. I really can't find a selection box that allows me to restore from the old original TND700. Is there a way to do it, or am I SOL and I have to start inputting all the info all over again. TS was really no help on this. Thanks in advance for any help.

ARGGGGG..... should have done a Restore first, then a update. Usually when the TND updates it takes what is on the TND that is attached. Thus if your Navi\user folder is basically blank it copies that folder.

BUT,,,, a slim chance that the older Navi\User folder from the other TND is still there on your computer. I do not do backups a lot so I am hoping it may be there. I manually move files all the time.

How computer savvy are you? You will have to change your settings to see hidden files and folders and drill down about 6 levels to find the folder. Then you can manually move the folder to your TND.

    Thanks,
    Mark
