"3 weeks after I got it, I got an oversize ticket in NY while following the route given by the 720. I called in to Tech Support and talked to Kevin. He verified I had the latest software, and basically said tough noogies. The lawyer cost $235, the reduced ticket cost $200. A week later, while following the route specified by the 720, I ended up at a 4 way stop with a sign that said no trucks straight, left or right. Pardon me?? Fortunately Barney Fife wasn't in the area this time."

Submitted to the GIS department to verify.

    Thanks,
    Mark

"I called in about 6-8 weeks ago because the unit was doing strange things - I believe I visited with David. Whenever I am headed west, the routing on the unit gets odd. I can be running an obvious I80/I76 route from PA to Denver, and the thing will want me to drop down onto I70, adding almost 200 miles - not shorter OR faster. It will also want me to go north into Chicago and then take I88 west to Davenport rather than staying on I80 to start with. Dave agreed that there was something odd going on. He suggested I experiment with the Prefer Interstate and Avoid Small Roads settings, and that if it didn't improve he would replace the unit."

Might be the Avoid Tunnels you have in your settings.

    Thanks,
    Mark

"Another interesting thing. If I am going east across IL, it correctly shows the speed limit. However, if I am going west, it shows the speed limit as 55 ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE STATE ON I70 OR I80."

I do see a difference on I-80, but I will submit to the GIS department to verify.

If the speed limits have been increased RM has already been made aware of.

    Thanks,
    Mark

There aren't any tunnels in IL, IA, NE or CO along the route back to Denver. The 720 has no problem routing me through the tunnels in PA on I76, so I don't believe I have it set to avoid tunnels.

This is what I saw when I set the route up using the compare route function.. You show a difference of 9 miles instead of 3 - I am sure that is because you have it set for city center instead of exact addresses. I chose the I70 route. My comment about the tolls is based on my knowledge of the roads. I have 2,000,000 miles experience. I know without looking that if I took the I80 route I would be paying tolls in OH, IN and IL. If I take the I70 route I have a few toll miles in Kansas. In either case, I would be paying tolls for the PA Turnpike, so that cost is a wash. I don't need to be messing with the avoid tolls setting because I don't always want to avoid tolls. However, where the difference in routing is 3 miles, then I will avoid the route with the heavier tolls.

I stopped in Spiceland, IN to fuel. I did not have this fuel stop programmed in as a stop. The fuel stop is .5 miles south of I70 at exit 123. I returned directly to I70 after fueling. When I got back on I70, the 720 decided it no longer wanted to follow the I70 route. Instead, it wanted to route me up to I80, across IA to Omaha, then on US and state routes through NE, KS and CO. It added over 150 miles to the trip, and was NOT faster.

Perhaps you should try plugging in going from the Flying J in Spiceland, IN to 7500 E. Crossroads Blvd. Loveland, CO 80538. If it routes you up to I80, then you have found the problem I experienced on this run. If you don't, then again I feel that I have a defective unit.

On routing like this, I really don't NEED the GPS to tell me what to do unless I run into road closures and such. My concern is that IF the unit is defective, then how can I rely on it to take me to places where I NEED it to perform properly?

There was no reason for it to try to move me up to I80. The only way I could get it to go back on the correct route was to plug in a stop at the TA in Concordia, MO. THEN it decided that the original I70 routing was good.

You keep telling me that I have it set to avoid tunnels. I don't think this is the case, as the 720 - ON THIS TRIP - had no problem routing me through THREE of them on I76 in PA. If it IS set to avoid tunnels, then why is it routing me through them?

I just checked the PM I sent you with my settings. It clearly shows that tunnels are allowed. Just to avoid further confusion, the following is a cut and paste of the settings I sent you in a PM:

    Settings:

    ETA Adj - ETA OK
    RECALC - AUTO
    ROUTE - FASTEST
    FREEWAYS - ALLOW ALL
    TOLLWAYS - ALLOW
    U TURNS - AVOID
    FERRIES - AVOID
    STATES TO AVOID - NONE
    CROSS COUNTRY BORDERS - AVOID
    DIRT ROADS - AVOID
    TUNNELS - ALLOW
    AVOID LIST - NONE
    FAST RECALC - ON

    Thanks for the help,

    Joe

I found the following information on a NY State web site regarding the Route 50 issue:

NY 50 (C.V. Whitney Memorial Highway) - Weibel Avenue to Van Dam Street in the City of Saratoga Springs and the Town of Wilton. (SARATOGA).

(Ballston Avenue) - Adelphi Street to CR 43 in the City of Saratoga Springs. (SARATOGA).

(NY 50/NY 67 overlap a.k.a. Church Avenue and Saratoga Road) - NY 67 (West High Street) to Ballston Avenue and NY 67 in the
Town of Ballston and Village of Ballston Spa. (SARATOGA).

According to the note at the shipper I was dealing with, there are restrictions not listed in this citing, and the state police have stated that they WILL ticket any 53' trailer that is in the wrong place, even though there are no signs to warn them.

    Hope this helps,

    Joe

I do not have it set to avoid tunnels. Tunnels are allowed. I never have had it set to avoid tunnels.

    Thanks,

    Joe

Ah, in looking at your PM on TTR it does show allow for tunnels, but anybody getting a PM will know it also sents an E-Mail. This is what I got on the E-Mail.

ETA Adj – ETA OK RECALC
    – AUTO ROUTE – FASTEST FREEWAYS – ALLOW ALL TOLLWAYS – ALLOW U TURNS – AVOID
FERRIES – AVOID STATES TO AVOID – NONE CROSS COUNTRY BORDERS – AVOID DIRT ROADS
    – AVOID TUNNELS – ALLOW AVOID LIST – NONE FAST RECALC – ON.

Let me look at the PM itself and try it again.

    Thanks,
    Mark

Thanks, I added the above to the Internal ticket. The GIS dept is pretty through. I should know within a day or two if that restriction is missing.

    Thanks,
    Mark

    GIS notes.for today:

I think they may be an incorrect restriction around the pilot in staunton VA (routing from shenandoah village drive in Waynesboro Va had an unnecessary 5 mile loop/detour)

Also on I77 sb crossing into NC the speed limit is 70mph (the gps briefly says 55). There is an advisory sign stating that the statewide speed limit in NC is 55mph unless otherwise.posted. There is a 70mph sign 1/4mi before this advisory and another immediately after...
