20 years ago WM was the job to have. Changes coming will make it look like just another average trucking job. Why do you think they are loosing so many good, long time drivers? Soon, they will accept ANYBODY who can pass a DOT physical. The age of the eliete WM driver is over!:(

The only logical explanation i can think of is that the rest of the companies have caught up and matched the type of driving conditions Walmart used to offer, other wise why else would it be collapsing, what Walmart need to do now is go even further forward to improve driver conditions

Lol, problem is they still think of it as an elite job, and 75% of drivers won't meet there standards.

No, they won't accept just anybody, what they will do is make it undesirable for the veterans, forcing them out, then contract out more loads to Swift, Schneider, western express, us express, and other megas to cover loads.

Then they will say the private fleet is no longer feasible, and contract out all loads.

I predicted a couple years ago that Walmart will get rid of their private fleet and outsource the transportation department. Looks like that prediction is coming to fruition.

Funny you should say that. I was told the same thing 2 decades ago by one of my buddies, but they still have one. Want to do an interesting study, check out how many WM fleet drivers have died in the past 20 years on the job.Every DC has an area set aside as a memorial to them. The reason, anyone's guess, but extreme stress and pressure to fulfill the companies seemingly never ending expectations and regulations are generally the unexplained reasons. But what do I know? I,m retired, lol!

    Elite? Ha.

Im sorry. I have to laugh.

With that out of my system, I can tell that the WM driver quality has fallen quite a bit in the last couple of years. It's a race to the bottom everywhere it seems. And it's unfortunate. Maybe I should be thankful I am off the road. However it's a waste seeing all this strong base of drivers go away.

How is a van driver elite? You drive and don’t crash. Drop and hook and maybe open a few doors. I don’t get it. Yes I drove van and left. Just didn’t feel like I was working.

    Aha.

Van is good because it is pretty easy. To a certain point.

For me, I need more than just closing a door and signing a BOL. I get real bad around vans actually get into a poor frame of mind with them things. I do very well with them and usually no problems... but I grow to despise them and then hate them because there isnt anything to "DO" with them. Slam the door, wind gear and go. Big deal. pffth. that it? HA...

Leaving the vans and getting into tanking, flatbedding in particular and other forms of trucking was my saving grace. I felt that I could actually now allow the mind to feast on the things to consider while the devil dances on the details. Milk Tanking was actually my best work because it's so particular. Bottom line, you cannot be picking up bad milk. It will ruin about 15 to 20 other farms work that morning. Flatbedding was FUN especially with a 48 foot spread axle where you can tell Louisiana scale boss that it's wide enough for a gator, and leave me alone with that very big 40,000 pound number back there. I love Louisiana, but I have to tease them so much because... just because HA.... Sometimes I allow the deck loading to go to 40K back there just to make them eyes POP when I settle onto one of their blessed scales.

Yup dry van is the least specialised trucking, thus making it the go to when it comes to farming out. I got out of it about 4yrs ago and never looked back I love me some tanker work.

It is if you’re pulling a 48’ liftgate with a single screw daycab and a pallet jack on board. ;)
