To agree with both of you, it does come down to what you put into it. I was OTR for a short period but now drive local. Most of those crying on this forum aren't even finding the right reasons to do so. Most complaints are legitimate but others didn't even try and the LOVE to exaggerate. I owned up to many of my mistakes and have even given have kudos to my former company after the fact. But you can't and won't please everyone in this industry. Plus you have to have a thick skin to do this job. That's my two cents.

The smart drivers don't waste time on "junk jack wagon outfits "
And end up with a bad track record. (job history) , dac report, MVR, CSA, score

.... Alot depends on what the driver's plan to do with his/her CDL ..." I advise".. young married with children drivers!!! DO NOT take a job OTR unless you plan to tough it out for 24 months WITH OUT seeing much of your family.
    On the brighter side...
The driver can seek out local work, if the driver is not a lazy driver and wants to see his babies he will go like a wildcat
On the other hand.. OTR is for single lone wolf types, it's hard at first but you will learn how to keep your body clock in line by staying close to the same schedule.
... You will enjoy the view across this great nation, you're friends at home will think you are dead because they haven't seen you in such a long time.
The trick is getting under the next load as fast as possible and in the wind before you go broke

I work for a good company I am well paid for industry standards and I still get a bit discouraged when I look at the take home pay divided by the number of hours I work. I guess I'm a cry baby or perhaps being the son of a union man I can't figure out how driving an 8 axle maxi truck doing the kinds of loads I haul to the places I go and the load securement I do totalling 70 hours a week how it doesn't pay better but I'm glad you guys are all happy with the way things are maybe I will be able to work 80 hours a week someday that should do it

    Companys!

They take in millions each year and set there rules up for one size fits all policy. Anyone that fails will get replaced with another 35 cents per mile truck driver. They get all the breaks, discounts and special offers because of big money. Some company's view driver's as a liability if they stick around for a while so it's better to set up rules to keep a revoling door swinging.
