Personally I don’t think it was bees. I’m leaning more towards yellow jackets or possibly wasps!!Those f’rs are highly aggressive!!

Don't ever try to wrap a plastic garbage bag around a bald face hornets nest when you have been drinking, speaking from experience........

Bees are bad this year due to dry and heat. Got a family of them that have built a big comb in between the rear duels on an old ‘47 Reo out here. Was string trimming around it a few weeks ago and they swarmed out one of the hand holes and went for my face mask. One got me in chin and another got me on the temple. Went after one of my dogs too. I walked backwards slowly 50 ft and then walked slowly the 400 or so ft to the house and they were still strafing me all the way there. Found out a little later they are getting their water from a fountain we have behind the house some 700 ft from were they been building. These are not africanized “killer” bees. Just pissed off bees fighting for their lives in this odd summer. We have tons of yellow jackets and red wasps and i am way less fearful of those guys. They stay put on their nests and try not to be seen and do not just swarm and attack like bees do.

In these parts We know all about yellow jackets we get barns and garages full of them from March to November. They build everywhere. I’ve been under more then one old dashboard or chassis for hours only to finally look up in the right place and say hello to a nest while working inches away from them. They generally are lazy during the hot days and do not move around much unless you disturb them directly. A quick shot of wasp spray takes care of all of them and the nest instantly. Bees not so much.
