carolina driver you said it best . less than 5 years NOBODY should be mentoring anyone ... that is why i left swift's orientation... they introduced me to the mentor and i asked him how long he been driving he said he been driving for 3 months and on his own half that time ... i looked at them and said you want him to train me about the road when i seen more in my 9 years than he has most of his life and they said yes.. i asked what on earth is this kid going to train me on and they said the obc and i said that is all i need to know .. thank you for your time and see you down the road and i quietly walked out of the room .. down the steps and out the door .. went to the car,... drove home and started with another company that following monday ......

i do not wish on ANY driver out there to see what I have seen in my life going on the road weather it be when i was driving straight truck for 6 years, or driving big trucks for 9 ..... my son seen a few things i have seen when he was younger and that got him out of wanting to drive truck .....

like i said before in other threads .. i have a college degree .. i have a degree in business .. i do not need to drive for a living .. i dont do it for the money obviously ... i do it for the love of the truck for the love of the industry ... for the love of the traveling and for the love of the lifestyle ...

3 of my neighbors want to do it for the money and i showed them just how much they can make on the road and needless to say .. they went another direction which is fine with me .. anyone on the road who is wanting to do it for the money needs their head examined ...

i have seen my paychecks go as little as 78.00 and as high as 1498.00 .... the first 5 years they averaged 500 .. the last few avergaed better but with this last company it went back down again and i really do not care .. i love to drive... if i make enough to cover the bills then i am happy ... i dont need to be a millionaire and to be honest .. i do not want to be one either ...

i believe in the simple way it was back then and that is a honest days work for a honest days pay and i know those days have come ... stayed for a brief while ... and left and will never come back again ....

i have been told that even though i been on the road since either straight truck or big truck for a total of almost 16 years, i think like an old timer and i will tell you one thing ... that is the very very best compliment i have ever got in this industry since i know and have seen what I refer to as an old timer ... i hold the ' real truckers ' that i consider old timers in the highest regards ... they made this industry what it is ... not the big companies .. the old timers who drove coast to coast when it was 50 miles an hour and less .. the ones in the single bunks with 1 hole to put clothes .. the ones who didn't even have a bunk but slept on the front seat with the wheel as their pillow ... the ones who drove a truck with a million gears .... they in my eyes are prasied and should be praised everyday ............

Something didn't sound right has the thread title and your first post give the impression that they passed on hiring you.

After rereading and talking to a mentor about the requirements to become one yea B.S. flag is down on this one. I'm going to take a shot in the dark here has you say that you made it to the final hours of orientation, Blood pressure was to high?

B.S is believing anything you hear coming out of the pie holes at Swifty.

1 year requirement to be a mentor? Well my cousin from Spokane Wa trained at Swift and her so called mentor had 7 months of driving experience including his own training the same year with the company.

Even if they followed their own policy's, which any experienced driver knows is at the whim of your average OTR company. Why the heck would a driver with many years behind the wheel of a big rig need to be trained by a rookie or veteran in the first place.

If it has been several years since you drove a truck I can see why you may need to get back in the grove a little but I took a year off once and some of these OTR company's think I forgot how to drive a truck or how to run a load. They just want to make you start at the bottom so you are cheaper.

The driving schools in my area won't even let you fill out a application as a trainer unless you have 5 years experience and most of their trainers have twice that. But if Shifty, I mean Swifty, needs trainers believe me, what they have in writing is thrown to the curb. After all they are the largest driver mill in the country and need cheap drivers to haul all that cheap freight.
