I had never even sat in a semi before arriving at swift driving academy in Millington, Tn at the beginning of February. However, I have just completed the 3rd and final week with no problems and here is how I did it.
1st-went in with the right attitude. I was done before I even left home. No crappy instructor or circumstance was changing that.
2nd-left my pride and dignity at home. You are going to mess up and get embarrassed, no one cares. Put your big-boy pants on and get back in the truck. From highschool drop outs to Phds, everyone screws the pooch at one point here.
3rd-took notes. They are going to tell you how to drive and perform maneuvers one time, write it down. No one can remember everything. When you get to a particular skill, refer back to your notes. They should be simple and clear, i used drawings as well.
4th-listened to the trainers. This is not highschool and these are not teachers. They are veteran truck drivers with tons of experience. They are not here to hold your hand and pat your back, so suck up your pride and soak up the valuable info, they know what they are doing.
5th-obeyed the rules. I like to drink and raise hell at times, but this is not the place for it. Don't drink, keep your mouth shut and study your crap.
6th-kept a positive attitude. I left home with the right attititude and more importantly, I maintained a winning attitude. It takes work and has to be intentional, it doesn't just happen.
You will need money, gear, paper etc., but that was not my intention here. I am simply trying to save others from doing the things that I saw dozens of people do that led them to failure. I am an average Joe with no experience but I succeeded the first time through. I started with 40 people and finished with 22 others. This is not easy to do but very obtainable if you apply those things that helped me. I am not trying to be cold, but stay away from people who have failed. They are infectious and will bring you down with their commentary on how things should be. Prepare your mind, sustain your body and show up ready to Take Care of Business. It can be and is done, now go do it.

Congrats. Like has been previously said keep the winning attitude with your mentor. Get a lemon, jump ship and get a different mentor because as i witnessed on my test out day, those that had crappy mentors failed the road test or backing test and had to go out with a new mentor for 50 more hours. All their time served and no brass ring. I felt bad for them.

You get what they give you, but you are probably getting D and 'some guy i can't remember his name'. They are straight laced, just keep your nose clean.
