I will be heading to Memphis, to start my new career, September 11.

I have always wanted to pull flatbed, partly because it will help me be more active while on the road. At the time I started looking into driving, I lived in Columbia, SC, and Greer was relatively close. Now, I live in Niagara Falls, NY. I am assuming I will be out of the Syracuse Terminal.

Is flatbed still in the cards for me? Refrigerated is my second choice.

Yes. They run a triangle from Greer to northern Indiana to Laredo (guess what that means with you living in Memphis?). Perhaps @RedRover or @Lepton1 can be of service to you.

    Lepton1 Thanks this.

You can go to school in Memphis. The last week they will make arrangements for you to attend orientation. Talk to your recruiter and make sure you are sent to Phoenix, Gary or Greer for orientation. Speaking in terms of securing loads all day long for several days of training, I would go with Gary for securement training. It's way too hot in Phoenix to be throwing tarps all day long lol. Greer is a cluster####. I do everything in my power to avoid ever going there.

FerrissWheel, ∆_Dan_∆ and Lepton1 Thank this.

Should be doable. If there is no flat freight they will give you a dry van load to get you home.

I think NY is planned by Gary but I could be wrong. It won't matter, after Securement training you'll have a temp DM out of SLC. After you upgrade and complete training you will get your actual DM and where ever he is will be your home terminal.

As soon as I get down there, do I state my desire to run flatbed after "graduation?" or when I go to orientation?

Tell them now if you can. Wouldnt hurt. Not many flatbed trainers out there, so you might have to decide either to go with any trai er available or sit and wait for one.
If you decide to go with anyone (which i would do) ask if you can switch to one when one comes available.
    Thus way you can start
learning the basics like trip planning, qualcom, elogs and backing.

If I'm not mistaken, you are required to go out with a flatbed mentor after orientation or you won't be able to switch until you get 6 months experience.

Well, my recruiter said that he can not officially offer me flatbed, due to my place of residence. I am not deterred, I will double check as soon as I get down to Memphis.

Ask the operater in Phoenix for "Ray Pedersen" he will be able to give you a definitive answer. If not he can pass you to someone who can.

if you have your passport, Swift will help you get your fastpass for Canada runs. Montreal bound sprinter vans go right thru Syracuse.
