my first post so please take it easy with the blow torches
My freind is teaching me to drive for him. He works for swift and is a mentor but has his own truck. I have ridden along and gotten a feel for how the lifestyle is.My question is ill be teaming with him after i get my cdl. how long would the training be? He is saying 2 days but is unsure for what it would be for being hired by an O/O who is also a mentor.
What would the procedures be on it besides sitting thru classes?
Will i have to go with another driver like the company drivers do as i will be on his truck?
im happy to get into trucking always liked driving everywhere for the heck of it hope u guys can help![]()

there are a couple of young ladies here that are o/o's with swift. one is Texas Nana, the other in Injun...
try and send them PM's if you can, or in due time, both will be along, in fact, i will send them PM's to come to this thread...hang tight....it may take some time... -
There will be some helpful people along soon. Not everyone gets on here every day, but they'll get here. -
i PM'd Texas Nana, i cannot make contact with Injun....
its the weekend, hopefully they will be along today. -
Oh, is my PM box full? Guess I'll have to clean that out.
Ms. Nana is a company driver, but she may be able to help too.
Regarding the original question: I must answer with another question: what training are you referring to that is only 2 days? If you are going to a Swift academy or to an outside "CDL-Mill" school, your training will be at least three to three and a half weeks. If you come in with CDL in hand, are hired by this O/O and Swift approves you, you will go to a three-day orientation.
I would suggest, for general driving knowledge and safety proceedures, find a Smith System course online and get some pointers there. Especially if you do not intend to go to a "formal" school. -

I would be getting trained by him and not going to a formal school. The Smith online course does seem like a good idea too as a addition to the training. The more i read on here of the "fun"encounters the more i think oh boy this is going to be one heck of a lifetime adventure ^_^
Thanks u for helping me.
BTW sliding tandems on a 05k series trailer is an adventure in itself i have come to find out lol -
Injun's correct that I and my husband are company drivers. I really don't know a thing about who an O/O or L/O with Swift can hire. I know several O/Os and L/Os that have hired their spouse but that spouse took training through Swift. So I would guess that they can't just teach them themself. But as I said, I really don't know.
Sorry I can't be of more help. -
if im not mistaken if you don't have your cdl now you have to go to a former school to get it and swift won't even look at you with out the former training or previous ort exp.
