hello all, just looking for info.got layed off from manufacturing job here in sc.back in feb, not looking good here in our county.have decided to get into trucking im 47. local schooling is not an option due to the fact cant get a loan and wife is still unemployed( since nov.) I have decided pretty much to go with swift for the training (cdl) and get the exp. do they have a terminal/yard here in sc? I live appx 1hr 15 mins away from greenville sc.also I know they are pushing from what i have read for drivers to start going teams so does this mean they will eventually not have solo? also if anyone reads this and you are from sc, give me a holler. thanks for your help.

    Hello from SC!

My advise to you is to not obligate yourself to any one company.

Get you CDL paid for thru GRANTS, Lottery Funds....FREE Money is available, if you qualify, for training individuals who want or need to re enter the workforce.

Qualifying can be and is not limited to being Unemployed, Under employed, Laid Off, Company Closure.

There are different grants/funds available for different circumstances.

If you are a resident of Greenville then give Greenville Technical College, Truck Drvr Trng Program, James Bailey Dept. Head. He will help you or at least give you some GREAT advice to help steer you in the direction that you seek.

I posted about Greenville Tech on the Thread NC Schools. Plus there are many other post that you can learn from.

    Best of luck!!!

I've been with Swift for over 2 years as a solo driver. Never once have I even been asked to run team. I don't have a crystal ball and I don't know the future, but it doesn't seem to me like Swift is planning on eliminating solos.

Swift is largely a short haul company. They do have some long haul which usually goes to the teams. As a solo, you will get shorter runs. This can lead to more hassle, as it's usually on the pickup or delivery where you'll run into problems/frustrations. To me, though, it's worth it to have a truck to myself.

P.S. by shorter runs I don't mean little quickies like 50 miles, though I do those occasionally. Most of my loads are between 400-1000 miles.

400-1000 miles...is that a week? cause thats not many miles if you ask me, i get 2,300 + every week

how much is the pay at swift? i no its paid out a bit more, but i hope its worth it for 400 miles.

That's not what he wrote, he wrote the loads are 400 - 1000 miles each, not a week, and this is about par.

They also pay premiums for shorter dispatches, so you make up for having less miles, depending on the mileage.

    got ya...thanks
i was with 2 swift drivers for about 3 hours today while unloading
the one guy has been with them for 20 years, and the other guy has been with them for 8 years, and they both really like the company a lot, and i learnd a lot about the company,
and i gotta say, swift really seems like its an ok company to work for, iv talked to many swift drivers, and the ones that have been driving for some time really enjoy it, seems like the ones that HATE swift are the rookies right our of school.
but i guess that could be with any company.
