My husband just started with Swift and has chosen their intermodal division. He started this week and has only had one load since Saturday. He delivered that on Monday, and doesn't pick up another one until today (Wed) at 2pm to take from Lancaster OH to Chicago. This seems slow. Can someone tell me if this is because it is a holiday week (July 4th)? Or is the intermodal always slow? He needs to be making money, and right now the wheels aren't turning!
Thanks for any responses!!!

I can't speak for Swift, but intermodal is supposedly busy all the time and do not celebrate holidays and run 24/7. They might be testing him to see if he stays on...or maybe regular dispatch is on vacation.
-
He came to them with previous trucking experience, so not sure why they would "test" him??? He needs to be driving, not sitting.
-
Swift is a big company, it's easy to get lost in the numbers. holiday might be a issue with load planning going on vacation?
-
From what I was told the "otr" intermodal based out of Chicago is new. Recruiter said they expect the average miles to be about 1500 per week. Supposedly stop pay will make up for the low miles. I would wait until after the holiday to see what this position is going to be all about.

Good point. and Good advice.

I know for normal freight they are overbooked, last week they were having me help out with a lot of local stuff, yesterday they were having me go get stuff even after appointment times and said they are overbooked with a shortage of drivers and I was the only driver available in that area to help.
I dont know much about the intermodal stuff and never looked into it, if he keeps having trouble get him to go to normal freight, I have not had an issue of sitting at all in the past month, they keep me mostly planned before I even drop the current load. I think I only had one day where I sat around for a few hours and that was only since they were trying to route me to a certain terminal.
I do hear some drivers complain about sitting around waiting but I assume they are the lazy or picky drivers who refuse to go somewhere, I go anywhere and accept just about any load even the 30 mile runs. -
Intermodal in sumner is so busy they've had other companies come in and pull our trailers. Which doesn't make sense to me. I'm guessing finding a driver with a twic card is hard.

does Intermodal pay more? and does it require a certain amount of experience etc besides a twic?
