Was Variant a previous merger with USX? I see their trucks everywhere and they're always pulling USX trailers. Was just curious.

No, it was a spin off experiment that went wrong.
One of the (now ex), muckety mucks thought he could run a trucking company by computer alone. He was wrong. Now he's gone.

Although Swift was huge, their stock was cheap, making them relatively easy picking for a company with deep pockets.
Plus the fact that the Knights were pretty familiar with the Swift operation made it a relatively painless "merger" to complete .

I believe that there was some 'family' kinda thing going on as well......saying that Moyes and Knight had some sort of familial relationship

Lonesome and TB John Thank this.

They called it the "optimizer" and they really had their drivers thinking they were a separate company. I told them all to look up the DOT number on their door and see who actually employs them.

    Lonesome Thanks this.

Is variant even truely defunct? Still see a bunch of the grey cabs with Variant decals pulling USX decaled trailers.

Not really. I think they're just going to slowly roll it back into USX. It never was a thing to begin with. It was USX with a different name on the door.

Lonesome and NH Guy Thank this.
