Central...a dry van is nothing...better to learn about refers, a refer has two uses...temperature control and dry!

I thought that the owner of swift bought out dick simon and nenamed them central. I dont know much about either swift or central since I've never pulled for them and never will, but you being in Florida, the reefer would be my option. Although I do see swift everywhere I go in Florida. Pick your poison, do your time and get out. Good luck

The owner of Central owns a large share of Swift. Swift is public Central is private. Central was Dick Simon, Simon is now Kelley across the street. Skunks are still there though! I would definitely work for Central not Swift!

Close...Jerry Moyes...(owner of BOTH Swift and Central Ref) along with Central Freight, Swift Air...and many many more...(check out Saint Corporation).

Swift just recently announced they were applying (again) to go public, offering 700 million shares to the market, so to this point technically private, until the stock/public trade is activated (might have already started), and Kelle Transport is actually the son of Dick Simon....that was an ugly, ugly takeover by Moyes!:biggrin_25514:

Sorry, I must have gotten them confused with Swift cheese! I heard Swift was public long ago. I know for sure it was more of a surrender than a takeover as far as Simon. I was there for the process! Lawsuits and Taxes led to that surrender. Remember the truck in the State building deal! I have heard rumor that Kelle isn't too bad of a company? Of course it was from a kelle driver. Who knows! Trucking gossip is harder to follow and decipher than the TAliban!

Swift was private, then went public, then went private now is going public again. Or.......maybe it's been public more times than that. :biggrin_2556:

I know some drivers at central who use to be at swift and they like central better. But I also know a couple of drivers now with swift who like it better than their time at Central. They were Simon then Central soooooo who knows?

You didn't mention where you live, what the difference in pay is with the two companies. What is the hometime like, how about benefits?

You have to do what works out for you. What are your goals?

Personally,I think they are both bottom feeder meat grinder outfits. But if I had to pick one,I'd probably go with Swift. At least with them, you have a better shot at getting a dedicated run..

Thanks to all especially chompi, but i have chosen Central. Now God willing I can get a great experience and good training out of them. as of now I ship out on Sep. 4th to salt Lake city, Utah. I have read and researched a lot on this site and have gotten positive and negatives from both companies, but I will admit that I have gotten more positive from Central. My goals: work hard, run harder, learn, survive and support my family. Hard work is hard work for a reason and I'm not scared of it. Just to give you guys and idea of the type of person I am. If i got crappy loads I take them. I just hope I get a trainer who can see that I want to work hard and learn and someone who will show me the ropes the proper way.

I was about to post an identical thread, but since this one is here already I will just bring it back to life! :) Anyone else have an opinion on which is better? Swift or Central Ref?
I am going to go to one of them in the next two weeks and am having a darn hard time deciding.
Swift wants me to get a physical and cdl learner permit on my dime before I go which is going to be about 100 bucks. Of course, I would rather have that extra 100 bucks in my pocket during school. Anyone know how well Swift does as far as keeping you the "comfort zones" they have listed on their website? I would sure like to not to have to go to the northeast or deep south.
I have had heard both good and bad about equally about Swift, though, while I have heard mostly good about Central. But Central has some extra physical testing besides just DOT I think. I am a little worried about that; I'm not in really terrible shape, but I am a little overweight and a smoker.
I'm single with no kids so I don't care much about home time, just making money. Who will I most likely make the most money with my first year?
Any and all opinions, comments, suggestions, etc are very welcome!
