I've been hearing rumors for awhile that we will go paperless. I'm sure it will happen eventually, probably with most companies. It's just a matter of when. As to whether it's good or bad, it depends on how it's set up. I've heard some drivers say that the log puts them on duty if they are in the drivers seat, and I've heard others say that you can drive across a parking lot and still show off duty. If the logs allow a little wiggle room, it won't be bad. I've got a wait and see attitude right now.

Someone asked that question when I was in orientation
(February 2010).
We were told that they had some drivers using paperless logs as sort of an experiment, but if they did switch over, it wouldn't be anytime soon. -
I'm a student now and they came in to our class and said they would be switching over in the next couple of months

I have to say I'm bummed about his prospect. While it might make things simpler for the company, I am worried about the errors that are sure to happen. Like going to on duty driving just to get from the fuel island to a parking spot, using up 15 of your time when it takes no where near 15 mins to park, or even 7.5 mins which was the cut off for rounding to 15 with paper logs. Or at a shipper when you are waiting to get into a door and then it charges you another 15 mins for moving the truck from the staging to the dock, and then another 15 when they tell you to get out of the door first, then come inside to get your paperwork. If all that happened in one day you would get charged for 45mins of driving that never happened. Over a course of a year that will add up to lots of miles lost due to being out of hours.
By no means do I even know that this will happen but I have read threads here that have said that some e-logs indicate on duty driving if you are even in the drivers seat with the truck on sitting in a parking spot.
Machines are just that, and have no common sense and will do what ever their programming tells them to regardless of how much sense it makes or doesn't make. The Challenger and Rotten Thank this. -
It all depends on how it is set up. There are some things that you will have to remember to do. All in all, not a really bad deal. If it is set up the same that we had at SNI, you can driver all over a parking lot, as long as going slow, and it will never take you out of Off-Duty. Again, depends on how they have it set up. I was told in April that they were shotting for the summer, as soon as all of the new QC's are installed.

I was also told this would be in effect sometime this year. Guess we have to wait and see.

i heard that all major companies will have to go paperless by 2013.

The planner/manager of my dedicated account said by the end of the year we all will be on paperless logs.
They log to the minute. So if you drive 4 minutes it logs 4 minutes. There is no 15 minute increments like paperlogs. IIRC you can make a correction if the time is under 5 minutes or something like that. -
I am just curious to see how it is set up. You had to get to a certain gear or go a certain distance before it would change you to driving. Also we had to remember that every time we parked at a terminal for shop work, we had to log off in case the mechanics drove it. Forgot once, and when returned to truck saw that I could not drive because had been on duty for some time, and I was not even around. I was home.
scottied67 Thanks this.
