LOL! the headline and the story both indicate the truck hit the vehicles. all of them.
but hey, keep the faith buddy.HalpinUout Thanks this. -
Let's see - SWIFT + 2 mile 8% downgrade + 20mph truck restriction... Do the math.
My guess is that instead of the engine brake, he used the trolley valve to maintain 50mph down the hill. See it all the time. Then when he got to the bottom, all he had was tractor brakes to try to stop for the red light. Which wasn't enough.
Pure speculation, but I'll put $100 on it being the truth.
tinytim, Lepton1, FerrissWheel and 1 other person Thank this. -
They supposedly have 16k trucks on the road, that's a lot of exposure
But why does it seem that so many of their wrecks are so moronic?
How does 1 company end up with so many drivers doing such stupid, costly stuff?
Is it the management, safety and trainers or plain ol bad luck?
Gotta be costing a lot of bucks to operate this way!!!tucker Thanks this. -

Apparently they are telling the incoming students 19k trucks. I remember during my orientation they were claiming 22ktrucks, of course that was close to the Central merger so I'm guessing that's before they weeded the crap central trucks out.
Anyway, poor training, as in a mentor just wanting miles and not teaching #### is part of it. There are good, and there are bad. The other thing, is the freaking students themselves. They take in an insane volume of students and many of them have 0 respect for the job/ "think it's driving how hard could it be" (booted a student for that very reason, and filed a letter with driver development, but of course he has two more chances, with two more mentors) but they can drive a truck well enough to go solo. So they do, the lack or respect/attention catches up to them and bam.
There are many good candidates out there who are willing to learn and respect this industry and want to do the right thing. But there are far more who just plain don't give a #### and want a "job." This isn't a job though, it's a freaking career, a life style, a mindset. One lapse of judgment can be fatal, or just plain expensive. Or best of outcomes, embarrassing.
The cost thing is something to consider, took 4 total losses in one week (truck, trailer and cargo) to put my fleet in the red. And that is but one reefer fleet out of many. Got a message, about that one. Fortunately my fleet has been accident free for a month.
(There may have been a coherent thought in there somewhere.)Toomanybikes, Lepton1, tucker and 1 other person Thank this. -
The latest based on public filings for SEC shows that Swift has about 25,500 trucks and 23,500 drivers. In other words they can't keep enough butts in the seats. They are selling off equipment.
As a former trainer with Swift I can say that all of my trainees are still driving except one, and that one should never be allowed within 500 feet of a truck. All the others have no preventables and are doing well, either still at Swift or with other companies.
IMHO Swift needs to upgrade the training of their trainers.4mer trucker, tucker and FerrissWheel Thank this.
