I went with Swift starting in early July. Went to their school in Phoenix, and I'm now starting week 6 with a mentor. Some of you may remember my posts from earlier.

So far so good. Like working for any large corporation, you feel like a number a lot of the time, but I have no major complaints about my experience so far (except that my mentor is a little quirky, but from what I've read, it could be way worse lol).

From what I've seen it is up to you how many miles you will get, and what kind of runs. We are constantly working the system to get decent loads. The longest we have had to sit waiting for a load is about 5 hours, and that was 2 days ago. Most of the time we are up and running within 20-30 minutes at the most.

Getting a decent DM and WANTING to work seem to be the key. We'll see how things go when I get out in my own truck. I'll post back here from time time to let you know.

Do they have any women working there? If so, do they seem to like it?

I plan on going out and start interviewing drivers from diff companies next week. Swift is one of the ones on my list. I gotta see for myself if its still the pit of hell... maybe things will start to turn around...

I've seen quite a few women drivers, mostly at the terminals. If I were you, I would make sure and talk to the Swift drivers that are at the fuel islands, not the ones living in the truck stops and terminals. There seems to be a LOT of drivers who are lazy and hang out at the truck stops and terminals and complain a LOT. We never stay at the truck stops or terminals for more than a couple of hours. Of course we are running teams, so we're always moving.

There were an unusually high numbers of women in my class in PHX. Out of 24 graduates, 6 were women. Good luck, do your homework and go with the company that works for your situation. Swift worked well for my situation in life right now. It may not be the same for you.

When I worked for Swift, I do remember at the Terminals, people ALWAY complaining about SWIFT, I felt like telling them "QUIT" or "What are you still doing here then"? Atlanta Terminal was the worst complainers! (5 years ago)

When you say "NorCal" Where do you mean? I heard that nobody is hiring from Northern California right now.

When I was looking into doing this, Schneider was hiring if you lived along the I5 corridor. Swift will hire you no matter where you live, or just about. There were a lot of students from Northern California at the Swift school. I live in a small town near the base of the Sierra Nevada's.

I'm a little hesitant to say exactly where I live, as I'm trying to keep my anonymity, but the city has about 15,000 people with the surrounding area having about 45,000 people. Until Home Depot came to town about 2 years ago, WalMart was the biggest store in town.

Downieville isn't to far away. I go fishing up there on the Yuba when I get a chance. There's a nice pub/restaurant there I like to visit on the way home.
