I agree with what DickJones and Nana are saying. My first mentor was on a dedicated run but that isn't why I left his truck. His fleet used to be an 11 state regional including Colorado based out of Olive Branch, MS but has since been whittled down to a primarily 3 state dedicated. He mostly runs TN, MS, and LA and seeing as I grew up in all 3 states I wasn't gonna learn much running in familiar territory. As long as the Mentor is TEACHING and the student is getting to experience varied terrain and driving conditions I don't see any problem with a Mentor being on a dedicated fleet.

As Dick stated, every trip requires trip planning. Whether the Mentor takes the time to demonstrate it and allows the student to plan the trips has nothing to do with being dedicated. The example given was of a Mentor who actively chose not to TEACH and instead lead the student by the hand as if the student was on a field trip. What Dick and Nana are referring to is what a Mentor is supposed to be doing, passing along the information and training required for the student to be prepared to drive his/her own truck successfully.

Saying that a Mentor can't train properly on a dedicated fleet is akin to saying that a Mentor can't properly train in the Summer. Just because there isn't snow on the ground doesn't mean that the Mentor can't teach chaining and Mountain driving. Actually I would rather learn to chain in 75* Summer than on the side of a mountain in -5 wind chill... but then I am a little "Off"!!!
