Posted on the FMCSA Register this morning:

    NAME CHANGE
    Number Title Decided

MC-136818 SWIFT TRANSPORTATION CO. OF ARIZONA, INC - PHOENIX, AZ 04/21/2010
    MC-145072 M.S. CARRIERS, LLC - PHOENIX, AZ 04/21/2010

A company this large does not apply for a legal name change on a whim. Does anyone know what's going on?

Far as I know MS Carriers is or used to be a division of Swift and Co.

You still see swift pulling MS Carriers trailers.

It Still is. And it gets more interesting:

Legal Name: MS CARRIERS LLC (Name change effective 04/21/10)
    DBA Name:
    Physical Address: 2200 S 75TH AVE
    PHOENIX, AZ 85043
    Phone: (602) 269-9700

    MC or MX Number: MC-145072

    Power Units: 5 Drivers: 5
    MCS-150 Form Date: 04/19/2010 MCS-150 Mileage (Year): 845,306
    Operation Classification

    SafeStat Run Dates:
    03/26/2010- # of Power Units 5 # of Drivers 5
    09/25/2009- # of Power Units 670 # of Drivers 670
    03/27/2009- # of Power Units 200 # of Drivers 200

    Last Review None
    Carrier Operation Interstate

Same physical address as Swift. In March of last year MS was running 200 trucks, 200 drivers. In September it went up to 670 each. Last week (just before the name change was official) they are showing only 5 trucks and 5 drivers.

Articles of incorporation were filed on 4/14/10

I'm not ready to speculate on this yet, other than to say Jerry Moyes is one Clever Dude. He's up to something.

Funny, I thought MS Carriers ceased to exist when Swift bought them. Guess not.

There could very well have been a "time-line" required by the purchase/buyout agreement that required the name change to not take place until a set amount of time. I have seen many mergers/buy-outs etc. that were not allowed to change a name until either a financial objective was met and/or all legal requirements were completed.

It could also mean there is a new "division/group" being created - like a spin-off of sorts.

    Just sayin!

Every MS Carriers driver I ever talked to that stayed on with Swift mourned the loss of Mike Stears and his selling out to Swift. They loved MS and said while Swift was okay it wasn't anywhere near the same.

I concure with Baritone's post. I bet they met the legal and financial terms set and now is the time to officially change the name.
