By clarify I meant that you should let people know wal mart is a 24/7 364 or 365 a year operation.. the dc hardly ever shuts down unless there is a problem with power or christmas.. I know swift is running their guys rears off.. I am not calling you out what I am saying is there are a lot of these guys who are going to read what you typed and think.. Sweet I can go work crappy hours 5 days a week and have weekends off.. Which in most guys unfamiliar with retail trucking will not realize that holidays are a work day. Like here all the new guys think hell I am going to work up until say Christmas then it will be slow... It doesn't work like that it is busy for 3 weeks before and 3 days after a major holiday restocking the stores.. I know for a fact greatwide is also running the bull droppings out of their o/o's and company trucks right now... As for everything you typed I agree with.. I just don't think most newbies understand the operations and was just trying to clarify so they don't believe it is a more rosie picture than it is..

And with these last 2 contract negotiations (Swift/Greatwide in Florida) and (Texas same 2 carriers)...wal mart got alot more power over the companies.. and alot has changed in the last 6 months on their end...

gotcha. I went in on Christmas eve as the store opened back up at midnight. You are right about newbies not realizing what the time off meant. If they stopped to think about it with the hours walmart was open they would have a lightbulb go off but, still, it was not a bad job as a local position.

Ablsolutly no offense taken. Just trying to get as much intelligence as possible about this gig before I take it. Can't always listen to what the recruiter says.

These are not bad jobs as long as your aware of what they are going in. I met plenty of drivers who had been doing it for several years and were quite happy. I just couldn't get used to night driving.

I just want to make clear that it was not the job that had something wrong with it. Everything was exactly as it was told to me by the terminal manager. Make sure you do not mind night driving and sleeping days because that is what you will be doing. I didn't care to be a vampire but some had no problem with this. There are people for every job out there. Good luck with this one.

It would take an adjustment be I could swing nights. The fact that my fiancé is a RN makes it easy. She would make $6 more per hr to work nights.

But snowman, what kinda of money did you make? Also how many hrs did u wrk? It still has to be worth leaving my current job.

It was all slip seating. It was not day cabs but that was how SNI ran the account. They took the old trucks out of the fleet and sent them up here to die. Since the trucks did not go far and were back every day it really wasn't that much of a problem. There are a few stores on the account in Henderson, NC that you can not make a turn on in 11 hrs of driving and sleepers are required. When USX took over they brought in a bunch of day cabs and are trying to run those. All new day cabs also. They still have some sleepers for those longer runs, though. As for the money it was 2 yrs ago but I'm going to say $800/wk average. Not great but definatly not bad for a job your home every day.
