We operate mon-fri so I pretty much have my answer. For some reason i always thought it was optional, as to which rule you ran, but I have only worked for companies that used the 70 hour rule so it never occured to me to question it.
The thought of only working 60 hours a week (or less) is just weird to me... gonna take some getting used to.

A couple other problems I have are, If I am working then the trucking company is operating. It is possible to work more than 70 hrs in 8 days driving with a reset.
Kyle G. Thanks this. -
That mentions nor has anything to do with the 60/70.
There's a few Leo's on this site. That explained it.
It has to do with rolling 7 days or not.Kyle G. Thanks this. -
That's just it tho. Everybody is answering but we don't know the OP or his operation. It's NOT a 1 answer fits all situation.
Kyle G. Thanks this. -
Actually it is answered even without knowing if the op is running with a 5/6/7/ day operation. The guidance and link @not4hire hire posted answers both possible cases. And let's not try and make it more than that. There are exactly two possible cases. A 60/7 or a a 70/8 hour week. The company can choose, but not the driver, to use the 70 if they want to if and only if they are running 7 days a week.
The link provided has further guidance explaining how one must run 60/7 one week working 6 days or less, but if they deliver 7 days a week one week, can use the 70/8that week.Kyle G. Thanks this.
