Flatbed is more diverse as to what you can haul so you have a much larger customer base to work from. EG; your first load might be lumber, 2nd steel, 3rd vehicles, 4th roofing shingles...... like that.
Problem is, everybody and their dog has a flatbed division these days. Rates dropping accordingly with the oversupply of trucks. Just like everything else.
Were I starting out flatbedding right now I'd probably look for an outfit that had some kind of specialized contract base like Maverick.
