I'm guessing this is a dump or some other type of vocational truck? If you do a lot of off-roading, you could benefit from an 18 speed. But you'll probably have to replace the driveshaft, as the 18 speed will have more length to it, due to the additional auxiliary box. Same thing if you go to an 8LL. It all really comes down to how much money you're willing to sink into it... for a 20 year old truck, that's a substantial amount you're looking at.

Don't forget they wont trade you a 10 for an 18 either at the rebuilder / seller. And he's right, need to cut the shaft. Watch your torque too, make sure you get the same rating as what comes out.
And of course my usual preach......."Don't got to the commode without paper" which means get the rear main seal, pilot bearing, if Detroit check that cam seal, flywheel, linkage and cables plus U joints....anything between the engine and rears get evaluated.

didn't you say super 10? there's a small difference in leingth. the 18 speed has the same OD as the super 10. 18 just has a better low, 14-1 instead of 12-1in the S10. reality though if you're not going to haul 80,000 pounds plus you won't ever need anything more than 8LL.
