I submit you see so many trucks parked on ramps and have seen an explosion of trucks parking on the shoulder of the road for EVERY little thing because 90% of truck driver would rather sell their children to Al Qaeda than back into a parking spot. The "illegal" parking spots at the truck stops are the first to be taken, not the last.
Why doesn't some group of truck drivers open up a chain of very low cost truck parking lots in every major city and become instant millionaires?
Because it wouldn't be profitable. Land cost (getting loans difficult), upkeep, system and/or employees to collect fees, city ordinances (ughh, politics).
Oh f that. Everyone has a right to defend themselves from physical violence. Using lethal force to defend yourself from physical assault doesn't make you a punk. It makes you a man refusing to be a punching bag for some hot head.
15 years ago it was common to see a police presence at truck stops. They'd roll through the parking lot several times a night. Many cities decided to no longer bear the cost burden so local cops got replaced with private security.
Mostly politics(a lot of NIMBY communities are strongly opposed to any form of truck parking). And the ones that do get it try to limit the amount of spaces.
To give an example... Loves tried to put a truck stop in Davidson, MI. About 15 miles east of Flint on I69. Two things came out of that that show how hard it is for a truckstop to open up. 1. Was that after a couple years fighting with the township they finally gave up. 2. Loves made a statement that to this day surprises me. It costs them, on average, 750,000 dollars to get to the point of actually breaking ground. This isn't the truckstop costs, or land. It's 100% fighting NIMBY crown to even get the permits. Environmental studies, noise studies, and 100 other red tape bs that is thrown up.
Because many truckers reinforce the stereotype. Pissing on the lot, leaving piss jugs and #### bags on the floor. Making spots of the side of the road even though there’s still many spaces in the assigned spot.
