I've def been kicking around the idea of applying to the local when they open up their apps again. At the very least, after a year or two I could slide onto a large highway construction outfit just hauling their equipment around probably making somewhere in the $30s/hr. The operating engineers in my state don't open up their apps again until September 2020.

do it, it’s for sure in the 30’s if not 40’s.

you’re in a union state, call up the operators now if you want and see if they can’t find you a job.

highway heavy is where it’s at man, you don’t have to work when it’s cold as hell unless you get a side job in the winter and want to work.

also you don’t have to apply through the union, I never go through the hall. I just go directly to the companies I know are union and talk to them.

You know whats stupid on my part? I actually had a spot with the laborers union to do heavy highway work but I passed it up to go plumbers. My thought was that I'd stay busier with the plumbers lol. Here in NJ, we have quite a few large highway outfits. And I'm thinking to get in with them as a trucker, I dont need to be in the union already, but if I was hired I'd sign on with Teamsters (which I was before with ups) and be paid according to their contract. I wanna say even the dump trucks guys are making mid-$30s according to the teamster contract.

There's a guy here in Las Vegas that's 27 and owns 5 or 6 rentals. His first rental he used the VA program to buy it. Not supposed to rent those, but he did anyway to get started. He works in a casino and doesn't make that much in pay, but lives the good life on rental money every month. Has a condo he lives in near the strip and has lots of money and lots of women he meets at work in the casino.

Thats what I'm talkin bout. Getting into property is the way to go, just have to be smart about it. Can't do like all those knuckleheads did leading to the housing bubble pop in 2008.

yeah dude it’s easy to get on as a truck driver.

I’m a highway heavy teamster now, I’ll switch to operator once I’m vested.

I made 33 an hour here to drive a dump truck. Next year it’s 34.75.

I think I gotta make the move, bro. Plus, truth be told I like running trucks vs what I was doing this summer with the plumbers. They had my ### doing some heavy work, I'll tell you what. Which, that aint so bad, but since youre an apprentice, they almost expect you to be like a little obedient dog or something. I'm a grown ### man, I'm not trying to be somebodies errand boy busting my hump all day, and then get laid off for months on end to boot! Lol

Around here there is a real shortage of decent rental properties.
More folks are renting.....paying more for rent than a mortgage payment
would be. You might consider doing small commercial.....like car washes,
strip malls, subway shops, etc. Commercial will sign longer term lease.....
it is their best interest to keep the property cleaned up, etc.

A word of advice.....it is better to find decent tenants than it is to get
top dollar rent. My brother-in-law fixed up a rental house.....he charged
top dollar for rent.....problem was the house sat empty at least 50% of the
time. He rented it a few times to short-term people that just needed it for a
month or two.....no long term renters. He finally sold the house....

As for the job.....at the end you have to decide which you would rather do.
Both jobs have good points.....truck pays better at first.....plumbing will pay better
in the long term......BUT....life is to short to do a job you don't like.
