You don't have to be all that straight to slide the tandems. My co-driver's truck was behind me. I didn't want to hit her truck. If I had all the time in the world, could I have eventually got the rear of the trailer past the guard shack and re-entered the drop lot without sliding the tandems forward? Yes, but it would have taken long and been more hazardous.

Not being condescending. Being factual. The questions you are asking. Are year one driving knowledge.
So either both your CDL school and first company never explained it. Or you just failed to learn it. But even after that. You should have been able to learn it by yourself. From how the trailer tracked.

My CDL school talked about trailer tracking and how we need to compensate for trailer tracking on cloverleaf ramps and when making turns. But I don't remember my CDL school talking about how tandem placement affects trailer swing.

Let me get this straight.
You were trying to exit on the left side, do a u-turn counter clockwise, and pull back in on the right side?
The first issue I see right off the bat, assuming the picture is to scale, is pulling straight ahead would cause your trailer to track through the guard shack.
What I would’ve tried was to take a left out of the exit side, pull forward far enough to get straight again, back straight up, and then swing wide to your right to get back in on the entrance side.RockinChair and expedite_it Thank this.
