Tanker moves slower than dry van so 600 mile days don't happen. Typically 330 miles - 400 miles is a normal day for moving tanker loads. At sixty cents, that's not enough money.

Where I work pays day rate plus safety bonus & no accessory pay. I'm good with my pay at this company, for now. My food grade oil tanker averages 330 - 400 mpd and that's if I have a longer trip on highway routes. More often, I'm traveling in traffic & slower roadways for atleast portions of the trips. I am seeing job ads offering $0.60 a mile for tanker, stating 16 hour days. They are not offering enough driver pay even though their rates have not been reduced. My post is trying to warn drivers who are thinking about going tanker.

Thank you -- for bringing this issue to the attention of others who might like to spend some time in the tanker world (my latest gig: hauling fuel).
Otherwise -- when you finally get sick of being soaked -- you might like to spend some time on this tanker website:
Kenan Advantage Group - Tank Truck Transporters & Logistics (thekag.com)
Some of their food accounts are surprisingly lucrative for drivers.

In August I flew to Houston to visit my my son and on my drive back to the airport, I stopped at KAG on I-10 to talk to them. Since I have TWIC & Passport, they said the Beaumont TX terminal might be better for me because they do longer runs and Canada trips. (I love driving in Canada.) Rumors are going around they might be buying my company so I wanted to meet them and check out the terminal. I live in the NE atm, but plan to eventually relocate back in Houston so I thought it worth a visit. I know a tanker driver who switched from my company to Highway in Freeport TX and does 'out & back' and I like his schedule & he's making decent money working for them. But KAG is definitely worth investigating further. I may be a girl, but I'm an exceptional driver -- most of my coworkers would tell you they would trust me with pre-trips over 99% of the men working at our company. I have a construction background & was a biz owner with Graco line striping equipment so I have experience in maintaining my own equipment. Anyhow, we're all out to do a job and I just wanted to let drivers thinking about doing tanker to know that $0.60 a mile offer is terrible and not worth their time.Albertaflatbed, Accidental Trucker, Another Canadian driver and 1 other person Thank this.

You have to be a new driver where are you getting tankers move slower than vans? 65 miles a hour is the same in a tanker as a van.surge isn’t slowing a truck down..Your company might only have 300 mile runs .Some van companies only have 300 mile runs.I’ve ran 650 to 670 miles a day regularly pulling loaded tanksAlbertaflatbed and Another Canadian driver Thank this.

???? 70 mph is the same in a tanker as in any other rig.
As far as surge, you learn to drive it. That’s why a manual transmission is better than an automatic. You can control the surge.
I went from refers to tankers over 20 years ago and haven’t looked back. Just not having to deal with food warehouses and lumpers was worth the switch.wis bang, Blagoje, NutterTrucker and 4 others Thank this. -
This is all food grade tanker work.
