So I'm doing the on boarding paperwork to work for a company in CA. I live in AZ. Is it correct that I've got to pay income taxes to both states?

No, You only pay income to 1 state for each dollar earned.

Arizona and California have a reciprocal agreement.
You should talk to a local accountant that knows the trucking industry.

I'd ask somebody who knows the laws of California first. Here in NY, if you work in either of the 5 boroughs of New York or the city of Yonkers, there is a city income tax withheld. I doubt that a trucking company would be based in a dense mega-city like NY, but it might be possible.
misterG Thanks this. -
So another question - which state would be "work location"? AZ or CA?
-
you pay state on the state you live in

You can get all kinds of confused reading state regulations on income tax. You should see all of them for Colorado non residents. For OTR truck drivers. None of it applies. OTR truck drivers pay only in their permanent main residence state.

Where I work they told me, taxes are taken out based on my terminal location. Then they remit it to my home state. Something about since they don’t have a terminal in pa. Naturally I wasn’t gonna be based in ny and have to wait to get my money back. Ny has a higher tax rate then pa. So I went with our nc terminal as my base. Nc is about the same as pa. That’s how I understand it.
