What is questionable is pay for school board people, especially the Superintendent which often seems to be ridiculously high.

I think somewhere in the mix, the whole system has to spend to much money on school books or all the related materials for the teachers.

As for Holidays and Summers off, if you spend every day in a classroom full of kids you've earned it.

I've known a LOT of teachers (I managed the benefits plans, including pensions, for two school boards and had several hundred as individual clients and there have been several educators in my family; school, college and even a superintendent). Like any business/industry they have their fair share of slackers... chalk-holders, if you will. Overall, however, most teachers work hard, do a good job and have to deal with a lot more BS than I ever would. They also don't have nearly as much time off as a lot of people think. For sure they don't work as hard as a lot of other jobs, but they put in a lot of extra time too. And, as already mentioned, they take their work home and on holiday; marking, lesson plans, etc.

Up here, teaching is a very good, solid middle class, profession; generally good work environment, good pay and benefits, reasonable hours. There is the bureaucratic BS to deal with (like any government job) and of course you've got kids with attitudes and parents that are often worse (THEIR kid is special ).

I've spent some time volunteering in the classroom (teaching business--Junior Achievement) and I would say that Junior High (grades 7 - 9) are the worst (penance I guess--I was a terrorist at that age). Elementary kids are fun and want to please their teacher, so they're good and I found High School kids respectful. I couldn't do it full time though... there would be a mass school shooting. o_O

I was running off your last sentence, and not being sarcastic or demeaning. It would be a good idea to tie elected officials wages to teachers.

Socialist agendas? How do you know that? I know my kids aren't getting any those agendas. They're getting what they're supposed to get, plus technology classes. I know that's a big change from when I was in school. Times are definitely changing in the education world.

They knew what the pay was when they decided to be teachers. If they don't like it then do something else.

You know I went about how people get paid so little in another thread, it pertained to immigrants. I still have the mind frame that regardless of where you come from, it's insulting to pay so little to anybody. Folks work hard. They don't get handouts. They try to get out here and do something for themselves, but it's never enough to make ends meet for a lot of people. I went to college and got an education degree but I never went back to get my teaching license. Thanks but no thanks. I have the ability to educate people but education believe it or not, is as regulated as trucking is. Your teaching just for students to get good numbers on a test as opposed to teaching them to gain knowledge. That basic pay scale for the majority of jobs definitely has to be looked at in this country. Don't get it twisted, I'm not saying make everyone rich, but basic needs should be met with flying colors.

Of course they knew! They deserve more! That's
How profound. Gotta love thoughtful contributions.

    "Deserve" more ???
    Everybody believes they deserve more.
If you make a conscious decision to enter a vocation that has a payscale you don't like then you have made a severe blunder.
Police deserve more, firemen deserve more but are you willing to be taxed at a rate to provide these payscales...
    No, you are not.
We live in a free country. If you don't like your vocation then find another.
