Question...is there a thread on the website to discuss team drivers? That's what we are working towards and so it would be nice to discuss this with teams that are already out there on the road.

My first question would have to be about companies. From doing a lot of reading up on team driving I'm told that certain companies are much better than others for teams. We live in Virginia and will be going to school to get our cld in the next month or so. My main concern is finding the right company to start off with once we graduate.
Secondly...any advise you can give us is very much appreciated! Thank you all in advance for your support. -
well i dont know if they take newbies...but Abeline is out of VA....and i havent heard anything bad about them....but you might wanna try checkin them out on here....

Thanks giggles I will be sure to check them out...I know you are probably really busy but if you have time I would love to hear a detailed description of a typical 24hr day for you guys.
21yrs together on the road...wow! I hope that we can adjust to life on the road like you guys have. There's a lot riding on it.Giggles the Original Thanks this. -
When you talk to the recruiters try and see if their companies have the freight available or if they run a lot of teams. Reefer freight is more team friendly because it is more time sensitive so maybe look into the reefer companies. Also expedite and air freight. Try to stick with the larger companies. You don't have to go with a mega-carrier but the more trailers they have the more drop and hook you will do. Keep in mind too that not all mega-carriers are team friendly. Just because they are a large company doesn't mean they run "hot" loads all the time. Another good site besides this one to find out info is the OOIDA website.
Good luck guys...CasinoGal and Thephilteam Thank this. -
Just remember, no matter what company you talk to, the recruiter will tell you their teams run all sorts of miles so you'll have to sort through the BS. I've actually had two different companies tell me that they honestly aren't set up well for teams, including my current company, but most won't say that. We run a dedicated though so the miles are all there for us.
There are things you can do to better a situation of not enough team loads though if you run into that wherever you go. We basically turned ourselves into the "rescue" truck. We told the DM's if solo loads are late, we'll swap them out anytime and get them there. Many times we'd get a solo load, then swap out halfway through for something that would barely make it on time and it kept us moving well. Many times they were late even with us doing it which kind of sucks because you get to take all the flak at the customer for it being late even though it wasn't your fault. Now though, you're in a situation of delivering as fast as you can and ready for another load, rather than waiting a day or two because you're ridiculously early on a solo load. Once you get a reputation of taking anything like that, and getting loads done that even dispatch didn't think you'd pull off, you'll get even more calls to do it. It wasn't usually even my DM contacting me, but others because we'd done favors for them before. A lot of people don't like to swap loads for some reason so being known as someone who will helps.
Being the driver that always drives at night, I can tell you the companies I see a lot at night. US Xpress, Prime, Central and Covenant. If a team truck isn't rolling at night, you're not getting miles. Obviously not all of the trucks out there are night are team, but I'm guessing quite a few are.Last edited: Jul 5, 2012

Yes, Dirtybob has a good point. You are going to have to take what the recruiters say with a grain of salt! You will also have to sort through a lot of what other drivers tell you too! Absorb as much info as possible and then come back to this site and try to get some verification. Those recruiters are going to paint a real pretty picture of their company and most likely offer you all kinds of incentives and bonuses. Don't go with a company just because they are willing to give you $2500 up front just for coming to orientation. Too good to be true?
