I've read a couple posts about advantages running hard & taking your 34 hour restart vs. running a schedule that provides you hours all the time. I think I'm understanding, but want to verify.
PRESUME - The company wants drivers to run legal, log legal.
PRESUME - My wife and I aren't smart enough to try to doctor our logs, so we want to run safe and legal as well.
Is it better for the company (getting the most miles driven on their equipment) if we run hard, 11 hours driving, 10 hours sleeper time, then drive another 11 hrs. driving? Or running approximately 8.75 hours per day, and not needing a 34 hour restart?
Thank you in advance for your help (logsRus - I hope you respond, as you seem to have this all figured out in your daily duties)

You're going to get 40 differant answers to this one.
I'll give you my opinion...and it is "mine" only. And, it's how my last 2 co-drivers worked with me...IE is was all good for them too. NO we didnt quit each other
One has cancer, the other had a "major" accident in his car.
I suggest 10 & 10...straight across. If you want to run hard and max your money out. You only need 24 to reset a team, if you work it right.
Usually, you''ll have an 11 hr shift pulled if you drive 10, this allows for fueling and STP breaks.
Benefit: Neither of you is sitting up for extended periods of time prior to driving. You're well rested and you can chat an hour or so between, without killing yourself.
One thing that bothers some teams, I feel it hurts them. Is the fact the on duty driver will crawl back into the bunk and nap at a shipper/receiver, thereby disrupting their normal sleep patterns.
Everyone is differant, you guys will have to choose what works for you. Some teams say 12 & 12...I say no.
Some teams do the math based on the 14 hr clock vs actual drive time.... Complete your 11 if it takes the entire 14. Thats BS to me also. -
Honestly: I tell teams to do what you feel is best for you. Danc gave some good advice. If you don't mind driving 11 hours and taking a 10 hour break & there is plenty of freight, go for it. I don't say average your day out anymore here's why; Trucking is like construction, one week it's good and another week it may not be good. Therefore run "legally" what you can and turn them loads, if you need to do a 34 hour reset then so be it. That goes for solo or team etc. I do feel you understand what you are doing

Now let me clarify danc on the "you only need a 24 hour reset"
What he means by that is one of the partners are usually on their 10 hour rest break and the other driver takes them to the truck stop, the sit at the truck stop for 24 hours and wa la, the one driver now has a 34 because of the 10 hour sleeper break and the 24 hour period at the truck stop. Now that driver needs to drive out so you can get your 10 hour remaining break. Remember if you "might" go to Canada you want to take 36 hour breaks.
Gotta go to work
