Reread what you said about requesting time off in MI, just took it wrong I guess. Anyway, we have heard many that request time off all over. We just haven't done it yet..

Don't be requesting time off in Michigan, I need those loads to get home.
Oh yeah, I don't work at USX yet...
Speaking of that, recruiting says I can do orientation at either Springfield, OH or Markham, IL, my choice. Anyone have any thoughts about this? If you could choose would you have a preference between the two? -
Jeremyc Thanks this.

I figured Springfield was nicer.
It's a little farther from home for me, but I'm not taking the bus. -
but you may have better luck getting a truck at markhamSheepDog Thanks this. -
When I went by the Springfield yard last week, there were a lot of red trucks there and very few trailers....never seen it like that.

I'll probably go to Markham because its actually about a 3 hour drive versus the 6 to Springfield. Really don't want to wait for a truck though.
Heck, I might even take the bus after all. I just figured it would be easier to take all the things I want in the truck if I got a ride there, but then recruiter said I'll be on the Midwest regional fleet until my girlfriend is ready to go team so that will put me at home once a week anyways. -
Hi all, just got caught up here with the thread. I'm loving reading about your adventures NoCoCraig! I'm not a driver yet, but I have my liscence and all endorsements, looking for my first company. Looking at teaming for Schneider or USX. I have no partner, but am wondering if it would be better to find one (if possible in my area) or just hook up with one through the company I go with. Any advice on company and driver options would be appreciated. I'm not real good at being a loner, but I'm generally easy to get along with, so I think the team thing is better for my personality. I'm based in NoCo also. I messaged you NoCoCraig through your blog earlier. Nice blog by the way
. Looking forward to making your acquaintance. Talking to recruiters tomorrow about USX and Schneider. Also talking with my school to see if they might know of someone to team with (CDL College in Aurora)...great people by the way. My challenges: overcoming a poor work history for the last few years, married to a stay-at-home mom with 3 kids between 7 and 12, having a family that I actually want to be around. Trying to find local driving work is proving challenging, and thinking that an OTR option may be the only way to break into this industry. After a year in and paying some dues, hopefully I can then move into a more Regional, Dedicated or Local position. Any insight, input, comments, smart remarks...all welcome.

I've been reading through this thread over the last week, and I've been working my way through the blog run by Craig and his wife as they've travel the country. I've really enjoyed getting a chance to see the positive, the negative, and the just plain stressful.
This has been particularly helpful because my wife and I are hoping to drive for US Xpress. We go to orientation on the 23rd (she finishes school the week before that), and the stories I've read have helped calm some of my fears and given me realistic expectations about the job. Thanks for the helpful info!
