My wife and I are in our mid forties and are considering selling everything and going out on the road. She is getting tired of running her business and I am getting tired of my job in sales, purchasing and administration. The kids are grown, eldest actually works in customer service at Schneider.

We would keep our cottage in northern Wisconsin and someday buy another home in northern Michigan.

So what do those who have done it think? For someone who is not in financial dire straights, what is the best way to start out? I would like to eventually be an owner operator, maybe haul cars. We won't need much home time, since the kids are on their own.

I would say to go for it.
The best way to make money as a team is if all the income for that truck is going to the same account. So the income will be there.

I would hold off on selling everything till you both have your CDL's though. I met a couple while I was doing a refresher course that were doing the same thing. While the husband made it thru the CDL physical with no issues the Wife did not.
Now she is living with her grown son while her husband is over the road, because they sold everything they had.

I would suggest doing a community college Driver training program. It will take a semester to complete, driving some nights and weekends. But this will keep the cost of the classes down and you will not have a commetment to any particular company. You will get hired out of school by a company, and will probibly have a stack of pre-hires before you are half way thru.

    Good luck

Thanks for the reply. Is there a way you can take the CDL physical before applying just to make sure you are good to go?

You could also contact the local college program and ask who they use.

Thanks again for the replies. I will find out how to get the CDL physical before we make the final decision.

It's actually our oldest daughter that works at Schneider, but I think she works with customers rather than drivers. I also am not ready to blow our cover yet, as the youngest just started college 2 weeks ago and is rather resistant to change.

as far as finding out where to get a DOT physical, you can also call local doctors and clinics. As an o/o I had to get my own done, and called around to check prices and hours to see what place would work out best. Many doctors and clinics are familliar with the DOT physical, some want you to get the paperwork from the DMV, while others have it available for you right there. I recently paid $75, but there was one who charged $50, that one was not open when I could get in though.
    Good luck! :biggrin_25525:

    What he said!!!

That's the best advice you could possibly get. Both not selling everything, and the community college school. Make good and sure this is what both of you want, before you jump into it.

When I first started driving, I had it in mind that eventually the wife and I would buy our own rig and team drive. She took ONE SHORT trip with me as a ride along and told me she would never set foot in a truck again!

We had no incidents, nothing out of the ordinary (at least to me) happened, she just decided that she hated it and was not ever going to ride in one again, let alone drive one. That is why I came off the road to a local job.

At least for now. . .:biggrin_25511:

We were renting and ended up giving up our house and putting all our stuff in storage to start a new career as a team. I have a thread here "Starting School Tomorrow" if you want to see what the school experience is like for us. We are going through a CC program and we have had two other husband and wife teams stop by recently to say hello the the instructors that are having a blast.
