I have always liked the looks of these old Volvos. Has anyone driven one of them? What can you tell me about them? Like the actual model name and years of production? Was it made by Volvo, White, or GMC? What is a fair market value for one in good running shape?

I like 98 to 03 ones, own 99 and 01 now. I heard, again, just heard that dealers and Volvo don't offer support and parts for 97 and older.

I have never driven one but I like them also. These are the Volvo White WIA64 made from the mid 80s to 1997 I believe. Volvo White was in the 80s, then GMC joined in the 90s and stayed to the late 90s. Fair market for one in good shape would probably be 10 grand at the most, but the good news is it would likely have a mechanical motor or a pre emission motor.

What happened was in the 1980s when CF was trying to sell off Freightliner Volvo was a contender in the Freightliner purchase, but they could not afford to purchase Freightliner from CF, so instead they merged with White truck which also merged with GMC and that's where White GMC came from. Then Volvo eventually took over all of the GMC heavy truck and circa mid 1990's the first generation Volvo's showed up and then 1998 the second generation Volvo's came along.

I found it interesting when a national farm supply chain had a head line in the news paper listing a large amount of money they had donated to the FFA and 4H. While these are good causes for kids they actually asked customers to donate a dollar. Collected it and paid the organization of choice. That is still good for the kids but did they do it for the kids or free advertizing? Gray area? Probably both but the false head line was my only problem.
Jount venture, bought out, own controling stock, forced stock options, etc?
I did not find much in a breif search so this is all the best I remember and or was told. Volvo wanted to get into the American truck market and bought White. The only change was the Volvo White emblem to begin with. Then they bought out the GMC heavy truck division. White and GMC trucks were then produced with the blue fender emblems, Volvo White GMC Heavy Truck Corp.
The last new GMC's I saw were in 86 or 87. Conventional, day cab, single axle, silver 6V92's. We were told those were some of the last ones off the line. Volvo kept making GMC's intell all the parts were used up. Closed the door and told everyone to have a nice life.
The Volvo slash was added the grill a bit later.
Now we have Malvos.
Just a shame to see our American companies going away and the lack of competition.
Aside from all that I liked them quite well. The one in the picture has a set back axle, they ride and turn better than trucks with a straight bumper. Like all brands specs are a crap shoot, engine, trans, gears, rear suspension, etc. Some guys loved then and others did not. Cab is junk, lots of air noise around the doors unlike my old Pete. No air flow through the cab if you want to run windows down with moderate temps and you will die if your A/C quites.
We had good results with them in fleet trucks. BC Cummings, 12.7's, 9 and 10 speedsMike2633 Thanks this. -
Where do you buy parts for the older than 1998 trucks? I still see them on the road here and there.Mike2633 Thanks this. -
The Pre-98 Volvos are called Volvo WIA's
The VN Series 1st Generation was introduced in 1998 and produced till 2003.
The 2nd Generation VN Series was produced from 2004 to 2017.
The 3rd Generation VN Series will begin production for the 2018 Model Year.
The WIA and the VN do not share any body panels, doors, cabs or glass, unlike the 1st, 2nd and 3rd VN Series where the majority of the body structure, doors, and glass is interchangeable.brian991219, BoxCarKidd and Mike2633 Thank this. -
First volvo I drove was like the one in the photo, White/ Volvo that thing rode like a Cadillac you could put a full cup a Joe on the floor and go over railroad tracks and not spill a drop.
Florida Playboy and Mike2633 Thank this.
