Archaic now but Krajack Tank Lines used to give a copy of the actual invoice for each load to the leased operators with their settlements check.
I have managed a sulfuric acid terminal [around 1990] with all leased operators [paying a higher %] where the customer worked out what each load would pay. There was 100% rate transparency and guys were grossing $1500 to $2000 a week with the longest run being 300 miles sothe more local runs did multiples each day.
The downside was the huge amount of loads within the first price tier where zero to roughly 100 miles all paid the same however one of the busiest customers [battery plant around 90 miles] wasn't well liked when it paid the same as the refinery 2 miles from the plant!
Really had to keep the trips balanced to keep them happy.
Tell me more about “% of load” pay

The best way to make money on percentage loads is on extremely short hauls. For example, if you are located in a place like Houston, a load coming out of the port paid the same, whether it was going to Louisiana or Mississippi or to Baytown, Channelview or Katey. Heck, give me that short haul!
So, if I were in the Seattle area, I’d want any load going to Everette, Bellingham or Vancouver. I will sit there for weeks on end. Little short hops like that won’t pay much on mileage, but can actually be huge on percentage. Keep your dead head to a minimum as best you can.Sirscrapntruckalot and TheIncredibleBulk Thank this. -
When I was with McKenzie we got percentage on any load under 350 miles.
If I recall it was 28 percent. It seemed to work out well, especially if you could do a couple loads a day.TheIncredibleBulk Thanks this. -
When I was a company flat bed driver my first weeks pay check was $3140 for 3800 miles… few weeks later $3800 for 5 days ( Chicago to cali with 11 drops, extra drops pay $100 per drop.
Good to know that there’s still companies that will actually pay you for your labor and sacrifice living in the dog house away from family.TheIncredibleBulk Thanks this. -
