That's what I was thinking. I was just going to say, that you respect the truck just as you respect the airplane, and always be ahead of it.

Very true. At least in the aircraft you don't have to watch what's behind you as much (or more lol ) than what's in front of you.
Chinatown Thanks this. -
Here is a thread that might help you a little: http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...t/251196-going-over-the-road-with-knight.html the OP in that thread has basically the same "pre-story" as you.

Well I went from a truck to a desk.
If the truck paid what the desk did I would still probably be doing that. -
Little off topic, but reading these posts brought back memories of a close friend of mine from the past. His wife was having an affair & he played dumb to it. Started working at an airport & told his wife he was being paid in flight lessons, not a paycheck. One day he vanished. His wife never saw him again. I'm the only one he confided in as to what was going on. If I remember correctly, he got his pilot license and flew for Southern Air out of Miami. If you recall, one of their planes was shot down while running guns in Nicaragua. He wasn't on that aircraft though; he was shot down and disappeared in a river in Vietnam in a Huey. Great guy; quiet and unassuming. Thanks for bringing back memories of my friend.

Be sure to have some ready cash. Nothing gets you over the bumps in the road better than money. School, cost of job search (school should help with that, or find another one) outfitting yourself and the truck with summer and cold weather clothing, food storage and food, tools, cash for living on the road until your checks start to appear, the list of expenses that first year is pretty extensive. Surprisingly extensive. So, money is good. Lots of good information in these forum threads.

I fly a Cub ( taildragger ) should be good practice for hauling doubles & triples
I have been on this site for almost a year and am working in aviation in South Korea for the last 9 years. Have traveled all over the world working on airplanes and ready for a change myself. I will be giving up a great paying job with perks but am so burnt out working on airplanes unless it is my airplane.
I work on airplanes for a living , am building a Sonex experimental airplane as a hobby and fly my Cub every chance I get. It is a sickness haha
Now I am 60 and ready for something different. My wife will ride with me. It is not so much about the money but it has always interested me.
I keep looking for something that will work for me and have a few ideas but nothing for sure yet.
Just depends on how bad you want it I guess. I work 4 - 10 hour days a week and get sat, sun and Monday off every week. Insurance paid , $ 1500 travel allowance per year. 3 weeks paid vacation , 2 weeks paid personal time off ( PTO ) Time and a half for anything over 40 hours if I want to work it , not mandatory.
I get HOLA and COLA allowance ( housing and cost of living ) and pay no taxes since I am overseas.
And I am 4 hour flight from our home in the Philippines.
BUT , I give up a lot !
Family , kids , grandkids flying the Cub , riding the Harley and all sorts of other things I cant do here in Korea. So I make it home a few weeks a year.
In trucking I would at least be able to do all the family things and other things we like to do a few days each month.
So I can really relate to a career change. I have searched so many different companies. When I was in Indiana back in July I went to Knight and talked with them a little in Indianapolis , don't sound too bad but like all companies you always have someone with negative comments about any company I am interested in.
This is not a success story but maybe someday it will be haha , Very good topic and should be interesting.Attached Files:

Dude, there's a lot of us on here that traded in our khakis and polo's for a driving career! I was an IT Technician. I started doing component level troubleshooting, Telephone co-locate build outs, network installations, cell site upgrades and the last 3 years were doing remote support for businesses I got fatter and blinder. I don't miss that crap ONE BIT! I now start work earlier, I FINISH work earlier and only see my boss maybe once a day.
To quote Peter Gibbons from Officespace
"We don't have a lot of time on this earth! We weren't meant to spend it this way. Human beings were not meant to sit in little cubicles staring at computer screens all day, filling out useless forms and listening to eight different bosses drone on about about mission statements. "
Where in Central MA are you? I'm from MA too (West Roxbury).dennisroc Thanks this. -
I'm 41 too and currently work a corporate management gig here myself. You are not alone. I will be quitting and going to cdl school as soon as my house sells. As I've gotten older I realize money isnt everything. Life is too short to waste it doing something you don't enjoy. I will be making less than half what I do now if I'm lucky, but it will be totally worth it if I actually enjoy it.
