ok so my truck at work, a 92 w900 with a 425 horse 3406b cat, has a reputation of the jake brake occasionally not wanting to shut off- to the point of killing the engine, then making it a pain to start again, even if you flip the switch to the "off" position.
I have yet to use the jake, cause i have figured that starting downshifting earlier is better than sitting for an hour of two before it decides to restart would be better.
any thoughs on what would cause this, how to check it, and what it takes to fix it?
tempermental jake in my 3406b

Good chance the jakes need rebuilt.
I have to edit this. Check and make sure its not an electrical problem! If the power wire is unhooked and the jake stays on then its the jake itself that is hanging up.
If its the 349A jake you'll just need a spring kit, if its the 346A jake your on your own, I don't know anything about those.Last edited: Mar 21, 2009
Baack Thanks this. -
If you turn the power off and the jakes stay on its most likely a solenoid sticking in the on position. I agree with Les, its probably time to rebuild the jakes, solenoids dont come in the rebuild kit so you have to buy them separate.

also check all the electrical connections.
I had a short and it would hold one solenoid on.
