This may have been brought up before, but a quick search of the forums didn't fully answer my question.

I will be leaving for driving school in about a month, and will of course be doing OTR.

I am single, no kids who live with me.
My car is paid off and it will parked at the company while I am away.

I don't want to pay insurance on the vehicle if it's just sitting in a lot. I talked to my car ins. company, they suggested dropping it down to liability only. Then when I have hometime, I can call and get com/coll put back on and I will be changed only for the 3 or 4 days I am driving the vehicle.

This sounds good, but I don't even need liability insurance when it's sitting there. Also, I may not even want to go home and drive the car some months on my days off. I may stop at some city and spend my hometime there vacationing.

Is anyone else in the same boat as me? And if so, what did you do to with car insurance for your personal vehicle?

how much is your car worth? And is it paid for? Those are the two things i would think about first. No body wants to pay for insurance but you my have to. I noticed you may not have any otr time yet, you might have different opinion, after a few weeks on the road.

What happens if it gets stolen or vandalized while you are on the road? With no insurance that cost falls to you. You may think insurance is too expensive, but is it more expensive than paying to replace the car?

if something happend to your car while it was parked on company property they would'nt be responsible for the damage , you would have to take care of any damages. just seems like it would be more of a pain, to have call get and get coverage whenever you wanted to go somewhere . What if you raised your deductable? could you justify keeping full coverage

Ask about storage insurance for the car. I know that they have it, just don't know what the cost is. But many people storing classics use it instead of comp/coll/liab insurance when storing over the winter.

ok, let's say you get "part time" car insurance. now let's say you don't have any insurance while parked on company property.

now let's say for an unknown reason, something shorts out in your car's electrical system.

now let's say your car goes up in a ball of flames, taking with it, the surrounding cars.

now let's say. you're gonna get sued.

you go the cash to pay those lawsuits?????

keep liability if nothing else. this gives anyone some chance to recover any damages from anything that might happen.

this is why we have insurance, "in case anything happens".

it is one of those nasty facts of life, dad or mom never told us.

Yeah, you do need liability when it's just sitting there. If some goofball without insurance hits it....'nuff said. Liability only is fairly cheap.

You need liability in case someone steals it and hits something.

    Gizmo_Man and DragonTamerBrat Thank this.
