Being a wannabe I'm not too sure how to ask this question without sounding stupid, but.... I hope to start training with one of the mega's in the next couple of months. The wife and I are planning on moving to the southwest. Are there places or areas that are just out of the question as far as being able to get to work, (OTR)? What are they, and what would be good areas? Should we be looking at major metro areas, (we'd rather not), or is just being near an interstate enough? I would really appreciate any info on this, thanks.

Your best bet is to live in the same city as your companys terminal. The next best is to live close to their running lanes. If they run I-10 for instance, you should live near I-10, right? That doesn't mean you'll get to stop at the house, you may just be able to wave at it as you blow by with your hot load.

You say Southwest, do you mean Az./Ca. etc? Phoenix has many companies as does So.Ca. El Paso, a couple, nothing really in N.M.

I cannot answer your question, as I am just a wannabe aswell. But here is my thought, and I don't know if the carriers sees it that way.

What does it matter where you live as an OTR dirver? I mean, you will only have to commute to work once every 4-6 weeks or so. It's not like its a daily commute.

Thanks allow me. We are thinking southern Utah or Nevada, but would consider Arizona.maybe even Texas. I've noticed that a few of the training companies are in Salt Lake City, but am trying to get out of the cold. I don't know if I-15 is a running lane or not, or I-70 ?

Yeah, I-15 is a running lane, as is I-70. Tons of truck traffic from SLC to L.A. area. Andrus and Cox are 2 companies in S. Ut., (St. George). Tru-Line is in Vegas, Watkins-Sheppard has a lot in Vegas too.
