Krdog, what they are telling you about the dog is sound advice, the bus ticket was fair. Its just a bad situation because of your dog. NOW, you will find that some people on here will pop off about your skills, where you live, experience etc... and they bait you into an argument. Then here comes the calvary to flex their muscle and scold YOU or ban YOU, but never the origin of the insults.

I think it's sad, but this guy likely has a case involving a personal house pet. House pets aren't equipped to handle extreme outdoor temps.
Example:
A few years ago, a neighbor(ie the carrier) had a relative(ie the driver) visit, that owned a large dog. The dog subsequently chased another neighbors house cat up a tree so far that a fire truck was called to get the shaking/frightened house cat down(this cost $ to the owner of the cat). The cats owner then sued the neighbor(NOT the neighbors relative or actual owner of the dog) for damages and restitution and won the case on the grounds that the dog came from defendants property(even IF the defendant didn't own that dog in question). It was deemed the defendant(the carrier) being the property owner, was responsible for the naughty dog, regardless of the dogs owner(the driver).
I'm guessing the carrier(Covenant) could be shown to be in a similar situation by a savvy attorney. IF in fact, the carrier knew there was a dog on the truck(ie Covanent knew, because they charged the driver for having a pet).
Again, I suggest he contact PETA, and ask for PETA's help in legal representation. PETA will go after the trucking company like a rabid dog.

Sadly, if the person here had NO dog, and the carrier fired him and gave him no $ for a bus ticket. He likely wouldn't have ANY case.

I hired onto Covenant in good faith expecting to be respected and paid 'well' for my efforts. Instead I was disrespected, wrote up for following company policy, denied justifiable layover pay, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. In 11 months I made $12,000. When I was terminated I was penniless having spent my pay through advances as we hardly made enough miles to achieve a large enough paycheck to live on to next one. There was no way I could afford to rent a car with bus ticket money! NOBODY should be allowed to put ANYONE out in deadly weather conditions and that goes for Cali's anti-idling laws and any other state that would cook a driver in the summer or freeze him to death in the winter!

I guess you learned a lesson here. Now it is time to regroup and plan your next move.
You could lawyer up however, is it really worth the time? I like animals don't get me wrong but what is going to be accomplished. What kind of restitution do you expect? How much of it will you get in your hands?
As a suggestion find a new company local or otr and have someone watch your dog. Find out how the company operates and then bring Fido along.

As far as restituton goes, I'd be happy with the fees and court costs. If I were to undertake this it would be more to keep this from happening to someone else. These kinds of travesties are the reasons that began the teamsters union many years ago. Companies like Covenant should be taken to task for this kind of 'bussiness as usual' attitutude. We are human beings and deserve to treated as such
