Might be a stupid question but can someone explain these to me, PLEASE?
Trying to narrow down the list of companies I'd be interested in once I get my CDL.
    - What's the difference between LINEHAUL, LONGHAUL and DEDICATED divisions
    - LAYOVER
    - DETENTION
    - RETENTION
    - PER DIEM
    - When they/you guys talk about "time home"...does it mean the driver acyually takes the truck home ?

I am greener than green so be gentle, please. LOL:biggrin_2554:

Linehaul means you go out, usually terminal to terminal then return.
Longhaul means exactly what it implies. You are generally out for a few weeks at a time.
Dedicated means you haul for a specific fleet, usually shorter runs and home more often than longhaul. Swift has several dedicated fleets, not the least of which is Walmart. Our Walmart dedicated fleet is based at Walmart Distribution Centers, hauls Walmart trailers and normally hauls to a store and then returns to the "home" DC. There are some who run a sort of "circuit" through several DCs.

Layover is time between dropping one load and being dispatched on the next.
Detention is wait time at the customer.
Retention...only thing I can think of is whether drivers stay with the company or move on as soon as they can. A company with good retention will have a lower than average driver turnover rate.
Per Diem is one of two related things: a tax writeoff for each day you spend more than 100 miles from your tax home or "reimbursement" for that time paid to you by the company.

See? That didn't hurt too bad, did it?

skeet, Lady K and bolonogiciebolo Thank this.

Oh, yeah. Home Time. Exactly what it means. Time at home. Whether you take your tractor to the house or not really doesn't have anything to do with home time. And taking the tractor home is entirely between you and whichever company you work for. Many companies these days are getting away from bobtailing you home because they don't want to pay for the fuel.

So, if they don't let the driver take the tractor home...how does it work then?
    thanks

You park it where they tell you to park it and find your own way home. Many companies will allow another driver to use your assigned tractor if you are off work for 3 or more days , or just reassign you another unit when you return.

    bolonogiciebolo Thanks this.
