You only need enough hours to get to a truck stop that sells loose leaf logs :)

If anybody is using a Droid phone there is a great app called Recap+ that will help a person with that problem. It takes all the hard math out of the equation for those who are struggling to understand this simple problem.

Don’t worry about it just do what you want. Laws are made to be broken. If no one broke the law there would be no need for police, dot, courts, prisons or churches. So, it is my thinking that we need law breakers or unemployment rate for America would be over 50%. Do your part to help the economy!

HOS is federal, not state. But... you have two choices. First you need a recap chart to simplify things. You can either add up your last 7/8 days each day or you can do a rolling recap. If you aren't good adding and subtracting with fractions use a calculator.

Here's a chart trying to explain things. Ask questions what you don't understand.

:kermit: In the old days, before the 34 hr re-set, if you had no hours available for that day, you would sit until midnight to gain some hours, which would depend on how many hours you picked up from the previous 8th day. As we all know, we don't always use 11 hours a day, some days maybe 6 or 2 or 7 or whatever. So, in recapping the previous 8 days (yesterday you used 9, day before, 10, day before that, 6 etc etc etc.) as an example, you can see how many hours you pick each day. Know and understand this when you get dispatched to see if you can legally get the load there. (by looking at your recap). FYI, if you only drive/work (line 3,4) about 8.5 hrs a day, you will never run out of hours. With the 34 hr reset, you can sit for 34 hrs and then start fresh with zero hours used. You do not need to do a restart if you have hours to pick up the next day. So, you look at your recap and see just how many hours you are picking up in the next few days. And then decide if it's to your benefit to sit for 34.

If he's running Texas intrastate, they can operate under a different set of HOS rules.
