Thats not how it works in MD. maybe there's a different between states but in MD towing companies are heavily regulated and controlled. Police deem things civil matters when they're actually civil like bank repoes. Impounds are considered criminal because it's trespassing. If a fake tow company were to try anything even remotely close to what these guys are doing they would be arrested if they were NOT there at the request of the property owner in MD.

Utterly missing the point. These guys are NOT a towing company. They’re a couple of grifters with a couple of boots extorting people out of CASH only. These scams are getting to be widespread and are not even on the radar of the agencies that regulate legit towing companies with valid physical addresses. This has been explained repeatedly. What i dont get is why arent people legally covering their #####. If these dudes come up and boot you then they claim they work for X towing company then go to google, find that company and call them. If the agent is ligit, welp your an idiot who parked someplace dumb and deserve what you get. UNLESS you have written premission to be where you are.

If they are NOT ligit, call the police and say "hay i have a guy holding me hostage, i called the company he claims to be affiliated with and they denied that he works for them/i have written permission to be here and he is refuseing to acknowledge the permit. He is trying to extort money from me while activly threatening me and is saying he plans to take my vehicle, i am worried he is going to attempt to steal my truck and/or my cargo. Posibly place me in a situation to be assaulted." If the police refuse to show up and take care of it. Then whip out an angle grinder and destroy the boot then leave.

If the dude pulls a weapon on you. Well you already called the police and should you be forced to drop him with a 9mm brain tickler or beat the dude senseless, then your defense is easy and established with a police report. If not, you remove the boot and you leave. If he assaults you then again you have a police report stateing he was threatening you and you can crucify the idiot in court. If he tries to sue which as an illegal operation is about as likely as an honest politician. Again you already have a police report which is going to go a long way towards dismissing the idiots claim.

All that said, these booters as a rule only target illegal parking. So the easiest way to avoid being in this situation outside of mempus which is a whole matter of its own is simple. DONT. PARK. WHERE. YOU. ARE. NOT. ALLOWED. That will prevent 99% of this ####.

Both of these ignore the reality of the industry and the fact that these grifters are not targeting ILLEGALY parked trucks.

I have never, in 30+ years out here, had written permission to park anywhere except the long term spot I rent to park close to home.

As to why people cave , 98% of the population are lemmings. Confronted with an attitude, a boot, and a semi official looking and sounding person or vehicle most panic and cave. people love to talk big after the fact or in the hypothetical but sadly few will do so at the time.

What I’m stating is many police officers will simply just turn the other way, because they just don’t wanna mess with that even though it’s illegal… Kinda like cars speeding, and they let them go on by down the road speeding because they don’t wanna deal with it speeding is illegal. That makes sense but when they're called upon to a scene they have to investigate. It's not an option. Upon investigation it's pretty easy to know who has the legal grounds to tow and who doesn't. The police have a list of companies legally allowed to impound in their area. This is how it works in MD. Things may be different in TX but I seriously doubt it.
