123456 You have to start somewhere and he is right.I is what you put into it and if you treat them good they will treat you good, yes there are some just bad companies to that don't care. There are also the drivers who were fired for safety issues or whatever that will bad mouth the company and say anything to discredit them even good ones there is two sides to every story. One thing I want to know is with all the complains, issues with companies and regulations. Why isn't there unions to represent drivers at all companies if this happened the industry would be alot better.I also feel stongly on this that the older experianced drivers 2 yrs. or more should be helping out us new green drivers so we can be better drivers and the industry as a whole is stronger isn't it supposed to be a brotherhood.Just someone who is doing his research on starter companies as I have no CDL and am getting into the industry to see the Country I am single grown kids and can stay out a long time I like being alone and my own boss.I also don't expect alot my first yr. or to make more than 20k if I make more fine I just want to make more than 350-400 a week.(yes I know I will make that during training and I can live with that till I'm a solo driver in my own truck)I also am expecting the training phase from getting my CDL to training till I am solo to be like basic training was a ##### but I got through it and I have the attitude I can do this and I will do it I am also open minded and not afraid to ask questions or help anyone out who needs it just the way I am.I have to go OTR for a yr. and am going to do that to do what I want to do drive a dump truck locally we will see because I like to travel and see new places and see this Country the places I haven't been to and may just stay as an OTR driver suburb life sucks and there are no good paying jobs here in Cleveland I am sick of low paying jobs also yes I have a college degree but no exp.=no job in the IT field and armed security the pay is only 8-13 bucks an hr. unless you have a degree in the field or want to work as a CO in a jail or prison. I will do this and I am stubborn.

Based on my experience, go to a CDL school. Most of them have good training and can teach you what you need to know and help with job placement. I had gone with Schneider back on 03' and went through their student training program even though I already had my license and had been driving for a couple of years. It helped me fine tune my skills and learn more about the company at the time. Many of today's carriers are considered starter companies. I work for Knight and they have a student driver training program called Squire. It is sort of seppret from Knight but is part of it. I don't know too much about it but it would be worth a look. I have read most of this thread and lots of good advice is given. This is not an easy career change. Lot of alone time, lots of time away from home. Give it a year, most companies will want to charge you some how if you quit before that time or 90 days if not in there training programs. I am not saying my company is the best, but it is what you make of it. Knight works form me at this time, but there will be a time when something better will come along and when that door opens, I will have to take that chance. Until then, good luck and be safe once you get out there.

honestly, have to disagree. swift has treated me GREAT. i would recommend swift to anyone. my experience at their academy in tennessee and in road driving training in minnesota was spectacular.

i DO agree with u on CR england however. their school was AWFUL.
