As a driver / former instructor at two truck driving schools / former recruiter for 2 trucking companies I will offer this:
There is no such thing as the worst company to work for.... One person's worst could be another person's best.
Most new drivers get into this industry and think they know what they are getting into. Here is an example. While calling on a school in Kentucky, I met a former student that had applied to work for the company I recruited for. He had gone to work at another company. I saw him only 2 months later when he knew I would be back at the school (they published all recruiter visits on their website) and he wanted to know if he could still come to work for us.
He had gone to TWO OTHER COMPANIES in the short 2 months since I had last seen him. He gave me a ton of reasons that "they" were pure crap and how "we" were really his first choice after all (wonder why he didn't start with us?). After listening to his reasons I realized that it wasn't the companies that he didn't like.... it was truck driving.
I told him that we would be no different than the other 3 companies that he worked for. Here is the bottom line...each company that employs new drivers has something that they do just a little better than the others (and I do mean "just a little'). Basically you can change the paint job, the name on the side of the truck, and a penny or two per mile and they are all the same. I drive for a company that many consider to be the "worst" and I am happy. They do what they said the would, yet every day at every terminal someone is quitting because "we are pure crap".
Find a company and stick it out for at least 6 months before you make a decision. For the most part (again for the most part...not a hard fast rule), if you are thinking about leaving within 1-3 months it is probably trucking that you don't like - not the company.stt, Bigdubber, bikertrash61 and 1 other person Thank this. -

Maybe they're called recruiters for a reason, just like the military. Pretty good reason why tens of thousands join each year, but so few stay after initial enlistment.

Funny. True to get on and stay with a company for at least 6 months..a year is better for better jobs. They're all jobs, though. There is no "3 worst companies." I work for Swift, much maligned company, they've paid me every cent they told me they'd pay, on time, good equipment and maintenance, plenty of miles. All these companies do the same thing, pick up the load, drive it somewhere, deliver it to the consignee. Stay on time, don't crash your truck, most of these companies will be OK because they're not there to lose money, and they prefer the more useful employees. I think a lot of these complainers hang out at truck stops whining while they should shut the hell up and drive their loads. my $.02. OTR work is hard work, though...no doubt about that.Hammerup and Trucking Popeye Thank this. -

Every new company drivers complain, Look at the forums, I cant stand a driver with 1 or 2 years exp complaining, Pay your dues and shut the hell up, You all new drivers cant even imagine what we went thru in the 70:s, If it was like that still no one would be truck drivers, All new guys research and learn before you apply of course recruiters lie, That will never stop and I do praise the new drivers with the challenges with this profession, I am not yelling at no one, Contact drivers with 5, 10 ,20, 30 years exp and hear what they say, This is a 60% failure rate drivers quit daily leave trucks on highways loaded or unloaded and walk away that my friend is a pass to hell,, DAC will follow you on that forever ,Never abandon a truck, If you quit that's fine but do it professionally, I always say to new drivers by the time you get 20 years exp. you probably will go thru 20 companies and that's putting it mildly It cost a company a lot of money to recover equipment abandoned and not only that to lose an account which could put a business of shutting down , I have seen it happen a heck of a lot Good luck drivers and also to new drivers hang in there your time will come
