DFO Great thread. Just finished reading both and look forward to more posting. Since you are tracking MPG take a look at the website FuelGauges.com. Its free and you can put your info into the site when you fuel and it will track your miliage for you. There is even a smart phone app too so you can enter info right after you fuel in just a few seconds and it updates to the site. All for free.

To clarify which pictures made my nipples perk up, it was from the first set of pictures of your truck. I'm not much of a mechanic, so the the exhaust doesn't do much for me. Although it's pretty cool that you do all of this stuff on your own, so my thumbs are up for that one?! I don't wanna show you up on your own thread, but I have now been a solo driver for 2 months with Schneider (as I breath on my finger nails and polish them on my shirt). It's been a rough one, with only averaging around 2000 miles a week and 3 stops looking for empty trailers. I remember when I started reading your first thread. It took me 2 or 3 days to get into real-time-diesel. I'm definitely glad I got to this one earlier! I'm extremely happy for you that you decided to advance in this industry and hope that you succeed. I'm hoping that I can make it to the 6 month period and can't even think about thinking about trying to own my own truck. You got some some big ones down below, but I think, from the dedication you have conveyed on both threads, this should be a walk in the park for you. Until next time, keep on truckin' mother trucker!!

I have 2 questions. 1) I have to go out with an OSR "tomorrow" for some safety thing. Does anybody know what I should expect? 2) At what point do you usually get upgraded to a newer/better/more powerful truck? Thanks, and goodnight!!

First one with osr, best to drive it like you stole it. OK jk most likely to make sure you are driving the Schneider way, and haven't pu any bad habits. Make sure to wear your boots and dot your I and cross your T and you'll be fine. Second it's a crap shoot up your dbl and your current tractors age.

Good job DFO ! I sure wish i knew how to work on big rigs. Or had a place to do the work. But then again ive worked on way too many cars to really want to anyhow. Ill just look at your pics instead. good luck with the mpgs..

Thanks man! And just hang in there - give it one more month and if it doesn't improve with your current DBL (after going in and talking talking with them in person, I think this is really important), request another DBL. There is just no reason to continue to put up with crap miles and crap pay when it is possible to do much better. I hung in there for as long as I did because I had a different (getting my own truck) goal in mine, so I just rode it out until the end. If you still don't really see any improvement hang in there till your 6 months and then look elsewhere. That's what I'd have done if I wanted to stay a company driver.

If you've worked on cars you're all set - you just need a bigger hammer, lol. Honestly they aren't that bad to work on, generally you have more room to work, but all that extra room is needed so you can wedge that gigantic wrench in there at some odd angle to try to break a giant fitting loose.

I am so sore right now I can't believe it. After not doing any real work on a truck for over a year my body feels like it is about to just fall apart. I'm not a big guy and I have to cheat a lot of the time to get things done when working on these big trucks, but I manage. It works to my advantage too because I can get lots of places that others can't - I can't count how many times I'd have the other mechanics pull me out by my feet after they had me crawl in to get behind an engine, and I can easily get myself up between the driveline to get to the top of a transmission, etc. But still, I'm sore as hell from just removing and installing a DPF and a pain in the ### doser behind the turbo. I can't imagine pulling a trans or doing heavy suspension work (this was the worst, removing kingpins and leaf springs) like I used to... my God. Then again, doing all this on a gravel driveway spending most of the time inchworming around in coveralls on my back in gravel probably didn't help much, lol.

Gonna give Cummins a call and set up a time to take the truck down today then hit the load board and see where I'll be headed next.
