Did I miss it? What company does SheepDog work for? Please help, husband is graduating trucking school last week, looks like he has been lied to by recruiters and we don't know where to turn. We live in Alabama with our children...where should he go?

Hey Chump....(just messin) My first thought was, in California, my thinking is, is that you have a lot of drivers willing to work for less, and thus keep the pay low. Not sure if this is correct, but kinda like the supply and demand thing. Supply (available drivers) is high, the demand (number of jobs) is lower, thus driving the price (pay) down. I know here in the midwest, freight is crazy almost all of the time, and demand for drivers is high. I think across the board though, pay for drivers is way way behind. I keep hearing about driver shortages, but in reality, it just isn't true. If the need for drivers was high, then the pay would go up to attract more drivers, again, supply and demand. I think there's a lot of people making a lot of money off of hauling freight, it just isn't the one actually delivering it (US). As an O/O, and only having been in the business 2 years, I conclude that so far, operating costs (all) are about 1.05 a mile, and I average about 1.60 a mile (all miles), but I can certainly do better. I'm a lone wolf, as I am an approved carrier for a couple different companies. I dispatch myself, and that gets hectic, trying to drive and find the next load.... In my opinion, a good company could experience around 1.80-1.90 a mile, (all miles), which tells me, that if they are paying say.... .40 cents a mile, then they are making .40-.50 a mile on you. Just doesn't make sense why the truck owner should make more than the one doing 90% of the work. Imagine if drivers were paid .50-.60 cents a mile. In my opinion, the drivers would be happier, thus less turn over, better attitudes, maybe take better care of the truck, could slow down just a bit, saving fuel.... Just a few thoughts. Trying to be more active in the industry and this forum. I'd be interested in you thoughts about what I've said.

Okay all, one month down in the books and I have to say, not too bad. Truck and Trailer did need some service, that was neglected and just happen to fall in my lap but, I did as well as I expected, pay wise. I have only a few complaints but, they are not going to cause me to leave. I am confident that things will only get better from here.
My pay is currently .34cpm and will be bumped up to .36cpm within the next 2 months. No, not FANTASTIC pay but, good enough for me. Pay is NOT everything, it is a big part of why we work in the 1st place but, being happy where you work at or who you work with is the other big part of it. I would much rather work for lower pay and better environment that the opposite.
I don't have any benefits with this outfit and that is okay as well. As a future O/O, I will have to provide my own benefits anyway so,,,might as well start now. I don't get paid for dead-head miles either but, there aren't that many and because they keep me busy, fight for layover, I can look past that as well. I also didn't get all the layover for a load the other day but, going to find out about that today. I only got half. The big disappointment with this new company is, it is a Mom, Dad and Son outfit, which isn't bad but being they have 5 trucks and each person's job is critical, and each truck must keep moving, some things get left out during the orientation. The person that was suppose to do the orientation with me, was sick with the flu so, I didn't get all the information I would have, until I was already driving. Like I said though, a few minor things will not cause me to leave. I run in the north each most of the time but, have got to see some family that I haven't seen in a while so, that helps too. peaceSublimeJulian Thanks this. -
Gratz SheepDog, the best people I ever worked for had only 5 trucks also, and I made 34cpm with them also, but made some of the biggest pay checks with them I have ever had, I was never required to lump anything but they would pay me the same thing that the lumper service quoted so a few times a week I made very good at that but you know being a truck driver I cherry picked that
SheepDog Thanks this. -
Congrats' Sheepdog. Nice avatar photo also. Appreciate your service for the USA.

Well, been a Company Driver for this outfit for almost 4 moths now. Have made more money here, as a solo driver, than anywhere else. Just spent two days at the office talking over details about buying this truck I have been driving since Jan 14th, 2014. Deal is pretty standard and the Owner is not looking to make a dime off the sale of this truck to me. I have had the best test drive a buyer could ask for and I love the truck! I have a copy of the lease purchase agreement and the Contractor agreement. I will be home in a few days where I will read over it with a fine tooth comb, and go over it with my wife, so she is abreast of what is going on. As one would think, I am somewhat nervous about starting a business but, I also feel confident in that I have done 5 years of research. Not to mention I have a few "phone a friends" and this forum to help me out.
Bottom line, this is a 2012 Freightliner Coronado Midroof Glider from Fitzgerald. It has 283,417 miles and no major problems since I started driving it. Owner says the payoff is $102,500 and I will be paying that off in 3.5 years. I also will have a trailer rental fee, Ins. IFTA, HUT, PrePass, EZPass, Plates,...etc. For now I will be pulling a reefer, but asap I will be pulling a step, it is what I want to do.
I am confident in the people I work with, they are honest and actually give a turd about their drivers. I have no worries that they will screw me over in anyway. I even get a hug from the Mom, when she see's me...lol123456 Thanks this.
