Last year I got on with NEMF and though it would be my last job, I've been looking at those truck since I was a teenager and knew people that got in there never left but even with the Union pay and benefits the hours were killing me and I never saw my kid which I wasn't willing to deal with. What was worse it my Terminal Mgr and all the dispatchers were AWESOME so I felt even worse taking off on them. I wound up getting a flatbed deal with a smaller company and they could only let me give a week notice if I wanted it because somebody took off early on them. I went in to my terminal mgr and just told him straight out, The way it was "supposed" to work out vs the way it's playing out just wasn't what I was led to believe. I told him I was missing out on time with my kid I'd never get back and putting too much load on my wife, I followed with everybody there was awesome too me and I really felt bad leaving but I had to put family first. He wasn't thrilled but got it. Last time I checked my DAC they didn't screw me but the company I'm with now doesn't use it so it wouldn't matter anyways. Not that it always works, but honesty does still do a lot for people.

    "To whom it may concern:

This is to inform you of my intent to resign. I plan to make {insert date} the last day of my employment.
Thanks for giving me the opportunity to work for this company and I wish everyone the very best.

    Regards,
    The awsome driver."

Then call the dispatcher and arrange your trip home. It is now official and documented.

Show up to work wrapped in tin foil under your clothes... Complain about gamma ray exposure , govt conspiracies... That always worked for me... They won't even make you stay the 2 weeks... Sometimes they let me go same day

There is a another angle to this also. What kind of employee are you? Are you the kind who was an asset to the company or are you the kind that your boss doesn't care if you leave or not? What is the company like? Are you unhappy there or do you just want to try something different? I don't believe in burning bridges and any place I quit in the last 24 years would hire me back tomorrow, not everyone can say that.

...have your next job already lined up and ready to go, then give your 2 week notice and be polite about it.

My take is this. Sit the whoever in charge down simply look him in the eye and say sorry but I'm letting you go effective immediately. Would they give you notice, be nice etc in writing just saying
